32 Years Later, This 94%-Rated Bill Murray Comedy Is Still the Best Feel-Good Movie Ever
The right time to rewatch it is coming.
What's the best thing to do when you're feeling down? And don't give me that extroverted "meet your friends" and "go to a concert" stuff. When you really have zero energy to do anything, all you want to do is put on a stupid romantic comedy or horror movie just to rest your brain for two hours.
Well, I think I hacked the system and figured out the best movie to watch when you are in the blue. A 30+ year old comedy called Groundhog Day is without a doubt your best choice. And here's why.
The movie introduces us to TV weatherman Phil Connors, who is broadcasting live from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where he is about to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. The man is a real jerk: he is the most self-centered, cynical, and unfriendly man you have ever seen. And he seems to enjoy it.
He traveled to Punxsutawney on February 1 with his team, including his producer, Rita Hanson, and his cameraman, Larry, and he made sure they both knew how unhappy he was to be working there with them. So when he goes to bed that day, his only wish is to end it all and go home the following day.
But that never happens. Instead, he gets caught in a time loop and his every "next day" turns out to be February 1st all over again. It takes Phil a while to realize what's going on, but once he does, he starts to lose it.
For the first few days, he continues to act like a jerk. Then he decides to pursue Rita romantically, and only after weeks and weeks of being trapped in a time loop does Phil realize that to get it all back, he has to become the best version of himself. His genuine desire and effort causes the "magic" to stop and the suffering to end.
After watching the movie, the belief that life can get better, no matter what happens, just comes back to me every time. And I’m not alone in that.
“Unbelievable cast, excellent script, perfect pacing, and just fun. Poignant moments, funny moments…I mean Bull Murray was the perfect lead for this. And such a satisfying character arc. There is nothing unnecessary in this movie either. It hits quickly and never lets you go. I went from yeah I really like this movie to I love this movie and it’s an absolute treasure of a film,” Redditor EnlightenedEnemy said.
Groundhog Day is available to stream on Netflix.
