Do we really need another Harry Potter project? Controversial, but HBO is still bringing the classic story back. However, fans aren't sitting still either, venturing beyond the familiar – exploring deeper lore and side characters the films left out. Here are the best of them.

From the adventures of the Marauders to the rise of Voldemort, some Harry Potter fans have taken matters into their own hands, creating short films that explore various storylines from the beloved universe – we've rounded up four of the most intriguing.

1. The Greater Good, 2013

The fantasy genre is unthinkable without the figure of a wise teacher. In Harry Potter, of course, this is Albus Dumbledore.

In the final part of the story, J.K. Rowling reveals the first pages of Dumbledore's biography, in which it is revealed that he was on the verge of turning to the dark side.

Despite the division of the final novel into two films, the creators only mentioned this storyline, but fans filled this gap. In The Greater Good a serious attitude to the original source coexists with high-quality visual effects – it's a must-see for anyone who is particularly interested in the personality of the Headmaster of Hogwarts.

2. Severus Snape and the Marauders, 2016

The older generation of Potters is the focus of a significant portion of the books, but the movies devote far less attention to this storyline – the creators of Severus Snape and the Marauders decided to fix that mistake.

In this short film, they delve deeper into the relationships between Severus, James Potter and the other Marauders. It's practically a professional movie, with convincing acting, a well-thought-out script, and special effects that are far better than you'd expect from a fan-made work.

3. Sirius Black and the Secret Keeper, 2012

Harry Potter begins with the fall of Voldemort after a failed assassination attempt on Harry. This event marked the end of the First Wizarding War. It is present in the novel only in flashbacks, although all its main characters played important roles in the main plot.

The short movie is a free fantasy on the subject of this war. According to the plot, a group of Death Eaters interrogate a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Marlene McKinnon, to find out the whereabouts of the Potter family.

Torture spells leave no traces, but this does not prevent the fan film from surpassing all official movies in tension and brutality.

4. The Master of Death (Le Maitre de la Mort), 2016

The movie tells the story of the rise of Voldemort. His biography was revealed in the sixth book of the saga, but only a small part of all the events made it into the movie. The Master of Death is a serious attempt by fans to make a movie about Voldemort's backstory.

The creators secured the consent of Warner Bros. for the shooting, so the film looks like an addition to the official film canon.
