Projects that have managed to transfer the gameplay to the big and small screens.
Horror movies and series are always popular, so it's no surprise that successful video game plots eventually make their way to the big and small screens and expand their audience.
In honor of the upcoming release of the Until Dawn movie, which hits theaters on April 25th, we look back at other successful movies and series adapted from video game storylines.
1. Twisted Metal, 2023
The original Twisted Metal isn't as well known today as other Sony franchises, but those who owned the first Playstation will surely shed a tear of nostalgia at the sight of this title.
Twisted Metal is a crazy mix of action and horror. In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a nameless man with no memory must deliver a mysterious package without being killed by marauders.
2. Castlevania, 2017-2021
The animated series is based on the Japanese Castlevania series of games about the confrontation between the Belmont Clan and Dracula, specifically Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, a platformer from the early 90s.
The beginning of the series is familiar to anyone who has played at least one of the games: Dracula is on the loose, threatening to destroy humanity.
One of the Belmonts, armed with a family weapon – a special whip passed down through the clan of vampire hunters – sets out to fight him. Other characters come to his aid – the magician Sypha and the dhampir Alucard, Dracula's son.
3. Detention, 2019
Based on the 2017 game of the same name, Detention tells the story of a schoolgirl with psychological and family problems who encounters terrifying mystical secrets within the walls of her school.
Taiwan, 1962, the time of the White Terror. A group of students from one of the schools, led by two teachers, are studying forbidden literature. Unfortunately, there is a traitor who has betrayed an anti-government group.
Two tortured students suddenly find themselves in an empty school building that is both similar and different from the usual one.
4. Siren, 2006

When the family arrives at the village, they are given important advice: do not leave the house if you hear a siren. Shinichi gets the chance to find out why when he goes for a night walk and has no time to reach a safe place.
An adaptation of the game of the same name from the creator of the original Silent Hill. Director Yukihiko Tsutsumi builds up the tension and creates a feeling of sticky fear. The only drawback are the special effects, which now look outdated, but it is more than compensated for by the finale – bold and extremely unexpected.
5. Dead Space: Downfall, 2008
The mining and research ship Ishimura stumbles upon a mysterious red mark. On a desert planet, the team finds an equally mysterious obelisk covered in writing, and management decides to take the artifact aboard.
The discovery begins a nightmare that will lead to the death of most of the crew and change the history of space exploration forever.
Dead Space: Downfall is not a direct adaptation of the game Dead Space, but its prequel. It is better to get acquainted with the film after finishing the game: some important plot twists of the game are revealed in the adaptation.
