A dash of mysticism makes any detective story even more gripping.

On April 25th, Dead Boy Detectives was released on Netflix – the most anticipated premiere for those who love investigations mixed with the paranormal.

If you've already binge-watched all eight episodes and want to immerse yourself in a similar world, these five series are for you.

1. The Outsider, 2020

In a small town, eleven-year-old schoolboy Frankie is brutally murdered. The fingerprints of Terry Maitland, a youth baseball coach and respected citizen, are found at the scene. Several witnesses also point to him.

The police arrest a suspect in front of the whole town, without waiting for further evidence or DNA tests. However, the "killer" does not admit guilt and claims to have an alibi – which he has, as he was seen in another place at the time of the murder. But the locals already hate Terry and his family.

2. Wellington Paranormal, 2018-2020

Wellington Paranormal can be seen as the spiritual successor to What We Do in The Shadows – it tells the humorous story of the everyday life of evil spirits in the New Zealand city of Wellington, this time from the point of view of the police.

Wellington has a special police force that does not chase criminals or conduct investigations. They are busy tracking down and exposing supernatural creatures that live among people: vampires, zombies, werewolves, ghosts, and many other terrifying monsters that live in New Zealand.

3. The Devil’s Hour, 2022-...

Every night at 3:33 a.m., single mother Lucy wakes up to frightening dreams. In the morning, she tries to forget them – she has a lot of work to do, and her son Isaac needs extra attention. He has been talking to an invisible man for several days. Lucy's busy but stable life is turned upside down by the sudden appearance of a psychopathic killer who claims he needs to talk to her.

It's easy to get lost in the plot of The Devil's Hour, but an attentive viewer will be able to pick up the right thread and unravel the tangle of mysteries and contradictions. The showrunner of the project, British screenwriter Tom Moran, successfully combines a mystic detective story with drama, paying equal attention to both directions.

4. Utopia, 2013-2014

The graphic novel The Utopia Experiments is said to have predicted several terrible disasters. And its lost sequel even contains facts about future events. When the manuscript falls into the hands of five people, a mysterious organization begins a hunt for the book.

Unfortunately, this twisted British series about a global conspiracy was never deservedly recognized. The project was canceled and a remake was released, which turned out to be much weaker than the original. But the two existing seasons are a great gift for all fans of intricate mystical thrillers with elements of black humor.

5. Evil, 2019-2024

A charming mystery series about single mother and psychologist Kristen, who is hired by clergyman David to help him distinguish between cases of demonic possession and madness.

The main character has to investigate crimes and events connected to paranormal activities. The investigators reach a dead end, the press writes about "miracles," but Kristen doesn't really believe in it and continues to look for a rational explanation or psychological context for everything.

Kristen’s life changes when strange things start happening in her house and she starts having nightmares. The woman tries to stay sane, but there are things that defy understanding.
