There's more to the genre than Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, and it's time to explore all that fantasy has to offer.

While these shows are undeniably influential, the genre of fantasy goes far beyond wizards and elves or villainous monsters. Basically, any show that has either a mythical or supernatural agenda, or simply anything beyond the norms of the ordinary, can be considered fantasy.

However, sometimes the storylines for these shows end up being too complicated or too niche, and that may be the reason why the perfectly written and shot series end up on the sidelines.

Well, here are 5 overlooked shows that serve magic and the supernatural in a unique way, while offering engaging plots and complex characters.

1. The Order (2019-2020)

If you're a fan of fantasy mixed with teen drama and a pinch of magical intrigue, The Order is your next binge. Set at a university where a few students join a secret order to fight a mysterious enemy that targets magicians, this Canadian thriller has all the necessary elements of a perfect fantasy drama.

Jake Manley stars as freshman Jack Morton, who becomes embroiled in a mystical war and discovers he has deeper ties to the conflict than he realized. And Sarah Grey as Alyssa Drake adds a much-needed female perspective to the story. The show has a light tone that makes it an enjoyable watch.

2. School Spirits (2023-)

High school is hard enough, but can you imagine doing it as a ghost? School Spirits stars Peyton List as Maddie Nears, a teen who investigates her own murder alongside other ghosts at her high school.

The premise of the series sounds pretty simple, but the amazing visuals, perfect acting, and chaotic storytelling make it so much better than it could have been. Also, many fans of the ongoing supernatural thriller say that it is actually a sort of gripping mix of Pretty Little Liars and the iconic Ghosts. Well, there's some truth to that. So if you like ghost stories, you'll end up falling in love with this one as well.

“Guys please go watch the tv show ‘school spirits’ with Peyton List and Milo Mannheim. It has great coming of age themes and intricate relationship dynamics, it’s really moving and has a lot of fantastic emotional sequences especially about trauma. It’s also brilliantly shot, like it’s so creative with how it conveys things with the camera and the soundtrack is hit after hit. I highly recommend it,” Redditor Ok_Gap5014 said.

3. Locke & Key (2020-2022)

Based on the graphic novel by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez, Locke & Key is another brilliant example of how teen drama and fantasy go hand in hand. The three-season series follows the Locke family as they move into their family mansion after the tragic death of the patriarch. But they soon realize that their new home holds many secrets.

After a while, the children discover a set of magical keys that coincidentally unlock strange powers. But these keys also hold dark secrets that threaten the entire town. So the decision to use them could lead to a lot of strange consequences.

4. Kaos (2024)

One of the most brilliantly written fantasy shows in recent memory, this series from Charlie Covell (creator of The End of the F***ing World) is a bold reimagining of Greek mythology. Kaos perfectly blends dark humor and drama, with Jeff Goldblum leading an all-star cast that includes Aurora Perrineau, Misia Butler and Leila Farzad.

The show reinterprets famous Greek gods and myths, giving them new twists and making them relatable to today's audiences. It's unfortunate that the show has been canceled for now, but even if it doesn't find a platform to live on, the show's season can be watched as a standalone.

5. Mayfair Witches (2023-)

Any Alexandra Daddario fans out there? Well, don't miss your chance to see the actress in this supernatural horror as she stars in a story about a family of witches cursed for many generations.

While many fans compare the show to the books it’s based on and say it's a poor adaptation, we say give the show a chance to see for yourself the newly created dark and mysterious world full of magic.
