It’s time to mark your calendar for sleepless nights.

The new year means new movies of all types, and the horror genre is just about to kick a new season off. The upcoming months will bring a beloved franchise back while also promising Stephen King ’s fans a long-awaited gift as the author’s new adaptation is just weeks away from arriving in theatres.

By December, the genre will surely expand its borders with tens of new movies, but these five are the horror releases we’re most excited about — so are you, probably.

The Monkey

Based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name, The Monkey is set to land in theatres on February 21, and some critics already had a lot to say about the upcoming movie — including the praise for its pretty much unexpected comical side.

The story revolves around twin brothers, both played by Theo James, who discover their father’s vintage monkey toy in their house’s attic — not much time will pass until the cursed toy will set up a chain of deadly events.

The Ritual

There’s no way a psychological horror wouldn’t hit the screens this year — and The Ritual is a real treat for those who love this combination of genres. The movie will put its focus on two priests whose relationships get more tense once one of them is suddenly forced to question his faith and the other dives deeper into his dark past. The Ritual with Al Pacino, Dan Stevens and Ashley Greene in the leading roles will be released in cinemas on April 18.

Sinners

Another psychological horror flick with, coincidentally, the same release date — Sinners with Michael B. Jordan as its lead will also hit the cinemas worldwide on April 18. The plot revolves around twin brothers Elijah and Elias who, haunted by their troubled past, decide to come back to their hometown where they could potentially start a new life.

All their hopes are ruined once they realise that at home they’re welcomed by an even stronger evil force which will make them revisit all the past traumas.

Until Dawn

Fans of the old classic horror flicks should definitely mark April 25 in their calendars since that’s the date when Until Dawn, full of the 1980s vibe, lands in cinemas. The movie tells the story of Clover who, accompanied by her friends, makes an attempt to find her missing sister Melanie in a pretty intimidating valley.

The biggest trouble is that before getting to Melanie the group will have to find an explanation to some supernatural events and even escape from a masked killer — and for all of that they only have time until dawn.

28 Years Later

A sequel to Cillian Murphy ’s 2002 horror hit 28 Days Later, the movie will now come back to the same story almost 30 years after the zombie apocalypse broke out in the United Kingdom.

Murphy is said to be absent from the film, and the plot will revolve around a group of survivors trying to hide from zombies on an isolated island — things change when one of them decides to go and check whether everything calmed down. 28 Years Later will arrive in theatres on June 20.
