Most late sequels end up being underwhelming, but in rare cases they turn out to be absolute gems and worthy successors to the originals.

The trend of suddenly remembering decades-old movies and creating reboots or sequels has become quite popular in recent years, as it is an easy way to exploit viewers' nostalgia to make a quick buck. And while most of these late sequels have been mediocre at best, sometimes the creators have given us real gems, proving that in rare cases it is not (or at least not entirely) about the money. So here are five long-overdue sequels that absolutely lived up to the originals.

T2 Trainspotting (2017)

In 1996, Danny Boyle directed the great black comedy-drama Trainspotting, based on the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name. It revolved around a group of Edinburgh junkies and showed how addiction changed each of their lives. The director had had an idea for a sequel since 2007, and finally, 21 years later, a sequel loosely based on the sequel novel Porno was released. With most of the cast, including Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle and Kelly Macdonald, reprising their roles, it followed the same group of ex-friends as they reunited two decades later.

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

After two movies about the titular goofy duo were released in 1989 and 1991, it seemed the franchise was completely dead, as Keanu Reeves went on to become a huge action star and Alex Winter's career stagnated. But 29 years later, a third film came out of nowhere and somehow managed to capture the wholesomely dumb spirit of the originals.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

The first Blade Runner, released in 1982, is a truly monumental sci-fi film, unanimously hailed as a cyberpunk classic and an overall great movie. So the sequel, released an astonishing 35 years later, had some huge shoes to fill, and it did the job perfectly. With Denis Villeneuve's signature cinematography, a stunning story, and solid performances from Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Harrison Ford, and more, it's one of the best sequels ever made.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

While vaguely based on Stephen King 's novel of the same name, it is more a direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining than the original novel. Starring Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and Kyliegh Curran, it follows a now-adult Danny Torrance and is, if not as iconic, a worthy successor to Kubrick's classic.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

No one expected the 1986 action drama Top Gun to get a sequel, so Maverick was a welcome surprise and even managed to surpass the original in almost every way, with great story, characters, and absolutely breathtaking action, making it one of the best movies of 2022.
