5 Most Bizarre Oscar Moments That Left Everyone Speechless

Oscars have been a stage for unexpected drama, hilarious mishaps, and downright bizarre moments. Today, we're looking back at the most cringe-worthy ones.
For nearly a century, the Oscars have been celebrating the art of filmmaking, bringing together the brightest stars and most talented minds in the industry. And the best part about all of this for us is the unscripted and raw moments from our beloved movie stars. We get a little glimpse of the big personalities behind these big projects.
But like any other live event, the Oscars have had its fair share of shocking moments. And we think that's another part why we are so drawn to these kinds of events – there's potential for something to go hilariously, horrifyingly wrong.
As we approach the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, we need to look back at the unforgettable (and cringe-worthy) television moments that Oscars gave us. These are now forever part of Hollywood history.
The Cringe-Worthy Musical Number
Yep, someone really thought pairing Rob Lowe with Snow White for an off-key musical number was the perfect way to open Hollywood's biggest night. But it was the year 1989 and that “someone” was a producer Allan Carr. He had a vision, but it went completely off the rails.
Rob Lowe, a rising Hollywood heartthrob, paired with an unknown actress playing Snow White, was belting out distorted versions of popular songs with awkward Hollywood-themed lyrics. And, to be honest, we gotta give it to him: he was confident. Too confident even.
Years later, he himself reflected on the incident speaking with The New York Times, saying:
"The academy asked me to do it. I was young and naïve...But to be a successful actor, you have to have a big dollop of self-denial, so I managed to convince myself that I’d killed it."
The show became known for all the wrong reasons, leading to an official apology from the Academy. And you can already imagine what it did to Alan Carr's career. Yikes.
That Time Idina Became “Adele Dazeem” Thanks to John Travolta
John Travolta gave us one of the most memorable mistakes ever made in award show history. And all it took was a few seconds to transform Idina Menzel into Adele Dazeem.
The moment was so bizarre that even Menzel herself couldn't believe what she'd heard seconds before her performance. But, as always, the Broadway star proved she's a professional and handled the situation with a lot of grace.
Though, during a Carpool Karaoke appearance, she revealed a side of her that we can relate to. She said:
“I had eight seconds to say to myself, at first I felt really sorry for myself, like, 'Meryl Streep 's out there. This is my big break and he just f– up my name, and then eight seconds, the band starts, I am like, 'Get your s– together. C'mon, this is your moment. Stop worrying about that he messed up your name. Sing, b–!” (via Today)
And sing she did! Her performance that followed was nothing short of spectacular. That's exactly how you pull yourself together.
The La La Land/Moonlight Envelope Mix-Up
The 2017 Oscars gave us the most dramatic moment in Academy Awards history. The La La Land/Moonlight Best Picture confusion was a moment that seemed to stop time itself.
The La La Land producers were midway through their acceptance speech when they all found out that Moonlight was the actual winner. Producer Jordan Horowitz's words, “Guys, I'm sorry. There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture. This is not a joke,” will forever be etched in our heads.
Ryan Gosling 's reaction to the chaos instantly became memeable. He simply stood on stage, laughing. Later he explained his response to ET, saying:
“And then I just heard, 'Oh Moonlight won,' and I was so relieved that I started laughing. But truthfully, I was also so thrilled that Moonlight won, I know the director…I’ve worked with them before. It’s such a groundbreaking film, made for a million dollars, and incredible achievement and I’m so happy for them that they were being recognized.”
And this is the best reaction for the absurdity of the moment.
Angelina Kissing Her Brother
Not all shocking Oscar moments happen during the ceremony. This one took place on a red carpet. We're talking about the infamous red carpet moment between Angelina Jolie and her brother James Haven.
And you already know how fast it became the talk of Hollywood.
However, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jolie attempted to put the controversy to rest, explaining it was purely out of brotherly love. She said:
"My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter."
Well, we guess that this family affection just didn't translate well on cameras.
Will Smith 's Slap
Last but not least (and the most recent) addition to Oscars' controversies is when Will Smith walked onto the stage and slapped the comedian, Chris Rock.
The incident occurred after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's appearance, and Will Smith showed everyone that he wouldn't tolerate any disrespect towards himself or, especially, his family members.
Smith later took to Instagram with a heartfelt apology:
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable...I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.”
