It was barely possible to predict these endings.

Cinema is replete with all kinds of onscreen deaths, including the unforeseen ones, which serve either to terrify the unexpecting audience or for comic relief. Sometimes even when everything seems safe and quiet, the filmmakers kill their characters all of a sudden to our shock.

Here are 5 of the most unforgettable examples of such deaths, chosen by Redditors. Heavy spoiler alert, obviously!

1.The Departed (2006) - Billy (Leonardo DiCaprio )

Presumably, this one comes first to mind when we’re talking about jaw-dropping movie killings. The thriller’s finale promised a fair ending when DiCaprio’s character catches Matt Damon’s bad guy Colin and prepares to bring justice to him, but he gets suddenly shot by Colin’s friend with his brains left on the back of the elevator wall.

2. The Big Lebowski (1998) - Donny (Steve Buscemi)

Even the Donny actor confessed that this very onscreen demise is his favorite one.

“The one that amused me the most was dying of a heart attack in The Big Lebowski. <...> I thought ‘this character is such a nice guy that there’s no way that they’re gonna kill him.’ And then when I got to the [part where] there’s the heart attack and I was like ‘Damnit, again’,” said Buscemi, and we felt the same way with this unexpected departure.

3. Tropic Thunder (2008) - Damien (Steve Coogan)

Here comes a comedy when the death, coming out of literally nowhere, served as an extremely great gag. Coogan’s character, the inexperienced director Damien plays a vital role in the first act of the movie, as he was the one to take his crew to the jungle to shoot an authentic war movie.

However, just after explaining his concept, he steps on a land mine and explodes with the subtle “Ooh”, which made the viewers laugh so hard.

4. Deep Blue Sea (1999) - Russell (Samuel L. Jackson )

This sci-fi horror dared to kill the character of the industry’s frequent survivor, Samuel L. Jackson. His Russell Franklin is abruptly dragged into the submersible pool by a shark and devoured just when he is giving an inspirational speech emphasizing the need for group unity, and this death proved the dangerous position of the crew.

5. Pulp Fiction (1994) - Marvin (Phil LaMarr)

Among all seven deaths, happening in Tarantino’s crime gem, this is presumably the most memorable and quick one. John Travolta’s Vincent shoots Marvin, their informer, in the face when they hit a bump in the car, comically exclaiming, "Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face." This phrase became iconic, as well as the whole death scene.
