Fans of Grey's Anatomy have somewhat gotten used to the blood and gore on the show, and have been exposed to some crazy situations.

From an early episode featuring two strangers impaled together by the same pole, to victims of a lion on the loose and a man with a bomb inside his body, fans have seen it all, but somehow, the show still manages to catch them by surprise.

The plane crash

Grey's Anatomy's biggest WTF moment has to go to the episode that seemed to change everything about the show: the plane crash. In the eighth season finale, six Grey's Anatomy doctors are involved in a traumatic aviation accident that leaves them fighting for their lives in the wilderness. Fans who had somewhat gotten used to the horror depicted in the operating room were in no way prepared to see fan-favorite Lexie crushed to death under plane debris and later eaten by wolves.

Fans are usually less affected by random character deaths, as they happen often and usually before viewers have the chance to grow attached to them. Understandably, viewers don't feel too much panic when a severely disfigured bus accident victim is brought in, however, he communicates with Meredith to reveal that he was none other than beloved George O'Malley. Moments after this revelation, George flatlines before fans had fully processed who he was.

Derek's death

The next WTF moment was not only unexpected, but fans felt it was so uncalled for.

Derek Shepherd, AKA McDreamy, stops on the roadside to help a family involved in a crash. With his good deed done, he goes on his way and is involved in a sudden, and devastating car accident. Everything happens so quickly. He is rushed to a nearby hospital but an error on their part leaves him braindead. His swift end was heartbreaking and came as a huge shock to fans that many still haven't gotten over.

Alex's exit

Alex Karev made it out of the series alive, but his departure from Grey-Sloan Memorial was a whole different level of WTF for fans.

Grey's Anatomy Fans Make It Clear: This Relationship Was a Total Trainwreck

After everything he and Jo had been through he abandoned her and left a series of letters to explain to his loved ones that he had gotten back with his ex-wife Izzie, who had used frozen embryos to conceive, and now he and she were an instant family with a pair of five-year-old twins.

Coming back from the dead

Finally, Grey's Anatomy is no stranger to death, fans experience a lot of it watching the series, what they don't expect to see is a character coming back from the dead. This is what it feels like when Owen Hunt's sister returns to Seattle after 10 years in captivity, presumed dead during the Iraq war. Not only was this a crazy storyline, but it was the last thing viewers could have ever expected to happen.
