People have always loved a good revenge story, from literary masterpieces like William Shakespeare's Hamlet to Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo, so it's no surprise that when the movie industry came along, they fit right in.

Here are five great revenge movies that will make you feel the righteous anger of the protagonist and root for them until the credits roll.

The Northman (2022)

Speaking of Hamlet, this Robert Eggers film is based on a Norse legend that served as the inspiration for Shakespeare's tragedy. Alexander Skarsgård plays Amleth, a Viking prince who has sworn to avenge his father, who was killed by his uncle Fjölnir when Amleth was a child. With visceral and bloody fight scenes, great acting and beautiful visuals, this ancient tale of revenge is definitely worth checking out.

John Wick ( 2014)

After four action-packed movies, you may have forgotten that it all started with revenge. After a group of young criminals unknowingly steal retired assassin John Wick's car and kill his puppy, they have essentially signed their death warrants, and it is extremely satisfying to see John carry them out.

Oldboy (2003)

After a simple businessman Oh Dae-su is imprisoned for 15 years for an unknown reason, he is determined to punish the person responsible. But as the plot thickens, it becomes clear that he may not be the only one seeking revenge.

Kill Bill Movies (2003-2004)

Quentin Tarantino gave us one of the most iconic modern revenge stories, in which Uma Thurman portrays an ex-member of an assassin squad who is almost killed by her former colleagues. But they didn't finish the job, and now Beatrix Kiddo is on a bloody quest for revenge, and she'll stop at nothing to get it.

I Saw the Devil (2010)

Korean filmmakers definitely know how to make a revenge story, and this 2010 movie is another example of that. After Kim Soo-hyun's fiancé falls victim to a serial killer, he develops an elaborate plan of sinister revenge that may even make you wonder if he has crossed the line into becoming a villain himself.
