5 strongest Hashira in Infinity Castle, ranked: a 14-year-old made the cut — a fan favorite didn't

Which makes it the one place where you can actually rank the Hashira. Everyone's fighting at their ceiling. Marks are showing up. Blades are turning red. Nobody is holding back, because holding back means dying.

So here's my ranking of the five who separate themselves from the pack. One of them is fourteen. One name you're expecting isn't here. Both of those facts are going to upset somebody.

5. Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira

Everyone underestimates Mitsuri because she is a walking exclamation point who blushes at everything. Everyone is wrong.

• Her muscles are roughly eight times denser than a normal person's, which is why she's stronger than most of the men in the room while looking like she's on her way to a picnic.
• Her sword is basically a whip. It bends. It attacks from angles nobody trained for.
• Once her Mark shows up, the whole package gets a horrifying upgrade.

Brute-forcing Mitsuri is a terrible plan. Ask anyone who tried.

4. Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira (age: fourteen)

Yes, fourteen. He made Hashira in a couple of months of training, which is the kind of thing that would make me quit whatever I was doing and go lie down.

Muichiro's whole deal is disorientation. Mist Breathing hides his rhythm; his Seventh Form turns him into a rumor. When his Mark appears, he becomes fast enough that an Upper Rank can't track him, and he's the first active Hashira in the series to take one down mostly on his own once the Mark is active.

That last sentence is why he's on this list and why he's this high. Being a child prodigy is one thing. Having a confirmed Upper Rank kill on your résumé at fourteen is another.

3. Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira

The first Hashira we ever met and still one of the best. Giyu is boring in the way great goalkeepers are boring: he doesn't waste movement, he doesn't panic, and he has a technique of his own invention — Eleventh Form, Dead Calm — that basically deletes incoming attacks.

Infinity Castle is where we finally see him against a real monster, and the film's director, Haruo Sotozaki, said the whole movie clicked for him watching Giyu lunge at Tanjiro in that climactic Akaza fight: "We have something here; we have something really beautiful here." He wasn't wrong. It's the sequence people walked out of the theater talking about.

Giyu is what happens when you give a man one emotion and a perfect defense. He barely speaks. He barely loses.

2. Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira

Sanemi fights like the demon owes him money. Wind Breathing is wide, violent and constantly changing angle, and he has the scars to prove he's spent years fighting at a range where most people die.

Then there's the blood. Sanemi has rare "marechi" blood that demons find intoxicating; just being near it messes with their focus. So he is, functionally, a man whose own bloodstream is a weapon. He's insufferable at dinner and irreplaceable in a fight. Every family has one.

1. Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira

Nobody argues about this one, which is refreshing. The other Hashira treat Gyomei like the strongest person alive because he is.

• His training regimen (moving boulders, standing under waterfalls) breaks accomplished slayers who try to keep up.
• He fights with a chained flail and an axe, so he's controlling two weapons at two ranges at once.
• He does all of this blind. His hearing and spatial sense are so refined that the blindness stopped being a weakness a long time ago.

He is also the most gentle man in the series and cries constantly. Highest power level, softest heart. Peak character design.

Now, the missing name

Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, is not on this list, and I can hear the screaming from here.

I get it. She's brilliant, she's terrifying in a completely different way, and her entire fighting style is a workaround for not having the physical strength to behead a demon. That's precisely why she's not here: this is a strength ranking, and Shinobu built her legend on being the exception to it. The comments are also going to want Obanai in Muichiro's spot, and honestly, that's a fair fight I'm not going to win.

For what it's worth, Sotozaki himself has a soft spot for someone who barely appears in the first film at all. "Inosuke is my bias," he told Deadline, promising the next chapter will reward the wait. So even the man who made the movie is playing favorites. We're all just doing it in public.
