5 Truly Terrifying J-Horrors That Will Make You Sleep With Your Lights On
This clinging, paranoid fear will make you check all the locks and turn on all the lights before going to bed.
Unlike Western movies, which often rely on sudden jump scares and bloody violence, J-horror is more subtle yet ultimately more terrifying.
Rather than shocking the viewers, it gets under their skin through an oppressive atmosphere of hopelessness, terrifying images, and stories in which evil not only frightens, but also haunts, infects, and destroys from within.
1. 'Audition', 1999

Shigeharu Aoyama, a widower, is looking for love. On the advice of a producer friend, he holds a screen test to find a bride. There, his attention is immediately drawn to the modestly beautiful Asami Yamazaki. However, behind her innocent facade lies a monster.
In just a few weeks, director Takashi Miike managed to create an incredibly terrifying film that straddles several genres.
The movie begins as a sentimental melodrama, develops into a detective story, and by the end, devolves into a full-blown meat grinder with severed limbs.
2. 'Tetsuo: The Iron Man', 1989

A man tries to implant a pipe into his body but becomes frightened by the maggots that appear in the wound. He runs outside and there, he is hit by a car driven by an office worker trying to cover up the crime.
Strange things then begin to happen to the man responsible for the accident – he seems to be gradually turning into metal.
Shinya Tsukamoto's movie is one of the strangest and most terrifying body horror works. It's difficult to deconstruct into a linear plot because the action gradually veers into arthouse territory. Tsukamoto terrifies with abrupt editing, extreme close-ups, and a constantly shaky camera.
3. 'Dark Water', 2002

Recently divorced, young mother Yoshimi Matsubara is now fighting in court for custody of her daughter, Ikuko. They moved into a terrible apartment building where the air is damp and water drips from the ceiling.
Furthermore, Yoshimi periodically sees a young girl and finds the same red handbag in various locations.
While this movie is unlikely to shock or frighten you, it will leave you feeling uneasy. Japanese filmmakers, like Hideo Nakata, have mastered the theme of loneliness in a big city.

One of Michi Kudo's colleagues commits suicide and leaves her a mysterious floppy disk. Meanwhile, Ryosuke, an economics student, notices that his computer is acting strangely – images of eerie people appear on the screen.
This movie made director Kiyoshi Kurosawa famous and inspired his American counterparts to create a remake. However, the Western version is hardly worth watching because its creators completely misunderstood the concept.
While Kiyoshi's version depicts people as alone even after death, the Western interpretation suggests that technology distances us from each other.
5. 'One Missed Call', 2003
