Despite having big stars like Kate Winslet or Alicia Vikander as their leads, these critically acclaimed shows never received the audiences’ love that they deserved.

With all the shows that eventually get a span of several seasons, miniseries have become a new television darling that hasn’t lost a bit of its popularity in the past several years.

This format, apparently, comes with its own advantages, that being an entire story told within one and only season after which you don’t have to wait another couple of years before finding out what’s next.

However, this doesn’t mean all miseries have become massive hits right after being released; what’s more, not so many of them even received the praise from the audiences, though critics might have had a lot of good things to say anyway.

The list is definitely longer, but these shows are some of the ones that were snubbed by the viewers in the most audacious manner.

Irma Vep (2022)

With an impressive critical score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, Irma Vep is probably one of the highest-rated miniseries on modern TV of recent years, coming as a reimagining of the 1996 movie of the same name.

The show stars Alicia Vikander as Mira, an American movie star who, after experiencing some major shifts in her personal life, takes on a new role in a remake of the French silent classic movie called Les Vampires. Soon the boundaries between herself and her character start becoming vaguer, forcing Mira to question the fiction and reality.

Irma Vep is available for watching on Max.

Mildred Pierce (2011)

One of the many shows starring Kate Winslet, Mildred Pierce also remains a hidden gem in the actress’ filmography, especially when compared to the raving success of her other miniseries, Mare of Easttown.

Also starring Evan Rachel Wood, the show is based on the novel of the same name and follows Winslet’s eponymous character struggling to find a job and provide for her family after divorcing her husband sometime during the Great Depression.

Coming as a second adaptation of the novel after a 1945 movie, the miniseries has plenty of novelties that should’ve attracted more viewers, with one of those being Winslet’s incredible performance that alone makes Mildred Pierce a worthy piece.

The show can be found on Max.

Under The Banner Of Heaven (2022)

Despite having a fantastic cast led by The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones, Under The Banner Of Heaven remains one of the most overlooked highly acclaimed series on digital platforms.

Based on Jon Krakauer’s 2003 book, the series offers a gripping story with a historically accurate narrative later on followed by other successful shows like Netflix ’s American Primeval.

Apart from Garfield and Edgar-Jones’ performances, Under The Banner Of Heaven has plenty to give to its potential viewers and deserves to be considered a modern classic.

The series is streaming on Hulu.

Station Eleven (2021 — 2022)

Nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards, Station Eleven is one of those sci-fi miniseries many wished had been running for much longer.

Based on the book of the same name, the series has its events unfolding several years after a flu pandemic that caused the almost certain collapse of civilization, leaving only a group of people who now have to find ways to survive in a dangerously empty world.

Station Eleven is a perfect watch for those who love seeing a big puzzle’s pieces slowly coming together and is currently streaming on Max.

A Very English Scandal (2018)

Starring Hugh Grant in one of his best villain roles, the show is based on real events and follows real-life English politician Jeremy Thorpe’s legal battle against Norman Josiffe who exposed some then forbidden truth, resulting in the downfall of Thorpe’s political career.

Though Grant isn’t a stranger to starring in miniseries, A Very English Scandal is so far one of the most underrated works in his filmography. Apart from powerful performances of the leading cast which also comprises Ben Wishaw, the series also has a bold social message to share with its audiences.

A Very English Scandal is streaming on Amazon Prime.
