5 Upcoming Stephen King Adaptations You Should Mark Your Calendar For

This year promises to become a very fruitful one for all of the author’s fans.
A new year isn’t a good year without at least one Stephen King movie in it, but 2025 will offer much more than that.
The first adaptation, Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey with Theo James in the leading role, has already gone through its theatrical run and is currently stored in digital platforms, while several more movies and TV shows based on King’s eternal novels and short stories will soon arrive in theatres or on streaming.
Many others are also in the production or have already spent some time in the editing room, preparing for another big release sometime in 2026 or later.
The Life of Chuck
Starring Marvel’s actors Tom Hiddleston and Karen Gillan, The Life of Chuck marks yet another collaboration between Stephen King and Mike Flanagan who has previously directed Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game.
The author and director have much more to share in the near future, but this year they will reunite for the highly anticipated theatrical release of the movie based on King’s 2020 novella of the same name. The Life of Chuck will follow three different stories happening in its titular character’s life that at some point will intertwine in a pretty disturbing way.
The movie will arrive in theatres in June this year.
Welcome to Derry
Coming off the immense box office success of 2017’s It and its sequel, Andy Muschietti is helming a broader perspective of the eerie clown’s background story.
With its first season currently in the post-production, Welcome to Derry has been recently confirmed to expand to at least three seasons, centring on Pennywise’s consecutive and carefully planned returns every 27 years.
The series will also feature Bill Skarsgård in his most famous role, so there might be nothing else to wish for a new development of the horrifying franchise. Welcome to Derry’s season 1 has no release date yet, but is scheduled to arrive on streaming sometime this year.
The Long Walk
This movie, based on Stephen King’s 1979 dystopian novel, might become a great option for The Hunger Games ’ fans too.
Helmed by Francis Lawrence, who actually directed The Hunger Games back in the day, The Long Walk will have its events unfolding in the futuristic USA where a yearly marathon called The Long Walk is held.
The only requirement for young men who choose to participate is non-stop walking along a specifically designed line; those who violate the rule will meet the death from the marathon’s supervisors.
The new adaptation, according to Lawrence, will be a very dark story that might help its audiences draw some parallels with what’s happening in the real world right now. The Long Walk is set to arrive in theatres on September 12.
The Running Man
Starring Glen Powell in the leading role, the new version of The Running Man promises to be an even more faithful adaptation than the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led 1987 hit movie.
Based on King’s 1982 novel of the same name, the movie will follow Powell’s Captain Ben Richards who decides to participate in a risky game to win the money prize which he would spend on medicine for his gravely ill daughter.
The Running Man is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 7.
The Dark Tower
One of Stephen King’s monumental literary works, The Dark Tower has already seen a pretty disappointing adaptation attempt back in 2017, but this time things are looking way better for the hit book series.
The author’s longtime collaborator Mike Flanagan is now set to helm a TV series based on The Dark Tower, possibly making King’s dream of a faithful adaptation a reality. The filmmaker acquired the rights for the original books back in 2022 and since then the project has remained in development, but so far there’s no saying about the leading cast or release date.
However, the series will presumably arrive on Prime Video sometime this year or, most likely, even later.
