These movies and shows did their best to refresh a rather well-worn theme of walking corpses.

Zombies have become a huge part of pop culture over the years, appearing in literally every type of media from movies and books to comics and video games.

Naturally, the theme has become overused, and creators have had to come up with new ways to impress audiences.

So here are five of the most unusual and unique takes on zombies ever seen in movies and TV shows.

In the Flesh (2013-2014)

This British drama miniseries explores a topic that rarely comes up in zombie-related media: what if there was a way to cure them?

It is set after a mysterious event when the recently deceased came back as hungry zombies all over the world, but were partially cured.

Now, with their consciousness restored, they struggle to reintegrate into society, using makeup and contact lenses to look more or less alive, but some people still remember the zombie apocalypse all too well.

Kingdom (2019-2020)

Based on the webtoon series The Kingdom of the Gods, this Korean show is best described as "Game of Thrones meets The Walking Dead. "

Set in 16th-century Korea, it follows Crown Prince Lee Chang as he struggles to stop the disease that turns people into flesh-eating monsters while trying to survive political machinations.

Train to Busan (2016)

Speaking of Korean takes on zombies, this film takes the concept of the "fast" infected, first introduced in Danny Boyle 's 2002 film 28 Days Later, and places it in the unusual enclosed environment of a high-speed train.

A father and daughter try to survive their journey from Seoul to Busan along with other passengers as a deadly infection sweeps through the country.

Overlord (2018)

The idea of Nazi zombies has been explored in comics, games, and some not-so-good movies, so this one, starring Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell, stands out as actually decent by comparison.

During World War II, a group of paratroopers stumble upon a lab where the Nazis are trying to create super-soldiers with a mysterious serum.

The Last of Us ( 2023-present)

While the concept of fungal zombies was first introduced in the original 2013 video game of the same name, the television series does a great job of adapting it to live action.

In a world ravaged by the Cordyceps fungus that now affects humans, a smuggler is tasked with transporting a young girl across the country, as she may be humanity's last hope of finding a cure.
