6. Rebel Moon

Release Date (Theaters): December 15, 2023

Release Date (Netflix): December 21, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 24%

Snyder has not been a particularly popular auteur with critics, and the reception to his latest effort, Rebel Moon, only reinforces the point, unfortunately. Rebel Moon (which was conceived and even pitched as a script for a new Star Wars movie) revolves around a former Imperial trooper seeking redemption as she struggles to resist the tyranny that has taken over the galaxy.

The idea is pretty straightforward, with the world inspired by both SW and Warhammer 40k, which only adds to the epic nature of the movie. However, the plot didn't seem of the highest quality or ingenuity.

5. Meg 2: The Trench

Release Date (Theaters): August 4, 2023

Release Date (Netflix): August 25, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 27%

The sci-fi action series Meg will never be able to compete with the iconic Jaws, but they are worthy live-action adaptations of Steve Alten's highly entertaining series of novels about a surviving population of megalodons. The second installment wasn't to everyone's taste, but thanks to Ben Wheatley's direction (and a decidedly big budget), the movie was still quite a fun ride.

4. 65

Release Date (Theaters): March 10, 2023

Release Date (Netflix): April 7, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 35%

The co-writers of A Quiet Place, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, wrote and directed this science fiction film with Adam Driver, which was also co-produced by Sam Raimi.

Though panned by critics, the film was embraced by moviegoers for its straightforward plot full of decent action sequences. The story is not sensational: 65 million years ago, a spacecraft crash landed on an alien planet with hostile creatures. The planet in question is Earth, and the aliens turn out to be dinosaurs.

3. Jung_E

Release date (Netflix): January 20, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes score: 50%

The story follows a biotech conglomerate that develops new war robots in order to prevail in the war against a rebellious faction of humans. The consciousness of the deceased war hero Captain Jung-yi is used to develop their AI. However, the corporation has its own agenda with the robots, as Jung-yi's daughter soon realizes.

The movie was directed by Yeon Sang-ho, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the iconic Train to Busan and the popular Netflix original show Hellbound. However, many commented that the VFX was a bit low quality and distracting from the events in the movie.

2. Bird Box Barcelona

Release date (Netflix): July 14, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes score: 53%

Bird Box Barcelona is a Spanish spinoff of the original 2018 horror film, which explores the fear of the dark even more than its predecessor. The new iteration of the story, following the tragic events in the Catalan capital, is built around an unbearable suspense and a unique mythology that was further developed in this Spanish spinoff.

Although Bird Box Barcelona failed to convince many horror buffs, it was noted that it was not a mere replica, as the film was able to deliver quite a unique story.

1. Spy Kids: Armageddon

Release date (Netflix): September 22, 2023

Rotten Tomatoes score: 54%

It has been 22 years since the whimsical yet charming family saga Spy Kids premiered, yet Robert Rodriguez has not abandoned his famous franchise. The filmmaker has collaborated with his now 26-year-old son, Racer, to produce a reboot of the classic movie, now starring Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi.

The plot follows the same formula — the spy kids must fill their parents' shoes to fight a powerful villain.
