6 New Movies of 2023 & 2024 to Watch on Netflix in January
So many movies, so little time.
As we speak, there are more than 100 movies waiting to be released on Netflix in the next couple of years. It would be impossible to cover them all, so here are ten intriguing films to start your 2024 off with a bang.
1. Society of the Snow
Release Date: January 4
Watch it if you like: survival stories
The true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 has been adapted for film and tv in the past, to mixed results. There was a mediocre Ethan Hawke vehicle in the 90s (Alive) and the terrible 1976 made-for-tv movie Survive! Meanwhile, the 2010 documentary 'I Am Alive: Surviving the Andes Plane Crash' was mostly overlooked.
But it looks like Netflix has at last managed to stick the landing. Society of the Snow has been getting rave reviews before its release, with critics citing the film's incredible visual effects as well as its psychological portrait of men forced to undertake extreme actions in the name of survival.
2. Good Grief
Release Date: January 5
Watch it if you like: Richard Curtis and/or Sofia Coppola movies
Fans of Dan Levy might be surprised when they watch the trailer for Good Grief, which the rising star wrote, directed, and performs in. Although Levy shot to fame with the broadly comedic Schitt's Creek, you'll see a totally different side to him here.
Levy plays Marc, a grieving widow whose husband passed away a year ago. Marc and his two best friends take a trip to Paris, where uncomfortable truths are stirred up and he starts the painful process of learning to move on.
3. Lift
Release Date: January 12
Watch it if you like: Ocean's 11
An all-star team of actors headed by Kevin Hart makes this heist comedy one to look out for. Hart plays mastermind thief Cyrus, whose crew is recruited to steal $500 million in gold before it ends up in the hands of a terrorist group. The catch? They must take the money from a vault on an airplane, and the theft must happen while the plane is in the air.
5. Badland Hunters
Release Date: January 26
Watch it if you like: All of Us Are Dead
After the success of 2023's South Korean thriller Concrete Utopia, it didn't take long for this sequel to be planned, written, and shot. Concrete Utopia takes place in an apartment building that becomes an oasis of safety after a devastating earthquake. Badland Hunters expands outwards, looking at a wider vision of post-apocalyptic Seoul. The earthquake has turned the city into a wasteland, and survivors fight for their lives as society crumbles around them.
4. The Kitchen
Release Date: January 19
Watch it if you like: Thrilling action paired with social commentary
It's 2040, and London has eradicated public housing as well as most social services. As the rich get richer, the poor are pushed into slums like The Kitchen, where ex-thief Izi is doing his best to go straight. But when his son becomes deathly ill, Izi decides to undertake a heist that will change his life forever.
Daniel Kaluuya and Kibwe Tavares co-directed The Kitchen. You might recognize Kaluuya's name from his most famous acting role – main character Chris in Get Out.
6. Sixty Minutes
Release Date: January 19
Watch it if you like: Run Lola Run
Octavio is a mixed martial arts fighter struggling to do right by his young daughter. On her birthday, he finds himself with exactly one hour to make it to her party – or he might lose custody forever. Running to his daughter also means skipping out on a fight, and soon he has enemies blocking his way home.
There isn't a lot of information out yet about this German action flick, but the fight scenes in the trailer have us feeling very excited.
