Christopher Nolan is one of the most influential directors of our time whose name is synonymous with the intellectual blockbuster.

Over the course of more than two decades, he has created films that have redefined the possibilities of mainstream cinema, from the mind-bending Memento to the epic Interstellar, and from the philosophical Inception to the poignant Oppenheimer.

8. 'Interstellar', 2014

In the near future, humanity is on the verge of a massive crisis. Joseph Cooper, a former NASA pilot and father of two, embarks on a perilous space mission in hopes of finding a planet suitable for colonization. However, the return journey drags on for years.

In Interstellar, Nolan combines the cold calculation of Stanley Kubrick with the sentimentality of Steven Spielberg, resulting in a spectacular blockbuster about the redeeming power of the love between a father and his daughter.

Desperately trying to return home, Cooper is essentially an Odysseus figure – only he is hindered not by Polyphemus or the Sirens, but by an inhospitable galaxy.

7. 'Inception', 2010

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86%

The plot follows a team of professional thieves led by the intellectual Cobb. They agree to a dangerous undertaking: infiltrating a billionaire's subconscious to plant the idea of dismantling his family's business empire.

This classic heist narrative is framed by the intriguing concept of a dream within a dream. Not only does Nolan explore the dreamlike nature of cinema, he also reflects on the complex relationship between the creator and the work itself.

However, Inception captivates not through its flirtation with metanarrative but through its dizzying action sequences, such as characters running along rotating walls.

6. 'Following', 1998

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%

Following marked the director's feature film debut, and even here, Nolan experiments with nonlinear storytelling. The plot, which centers on a young writer who falls under the sway of a street thief, serves as the framework for a revisionist take on a familiar narrative.

This strange friendship has disastrous consequences: the young man loses his identity completely and becomes a pawn in the hands of a cunning manipulator.

Despite the film's modest budget of just $6,000, Nolan managed to craft a near-perfect thriller featuring a brilliantly intricate mystery.

5. 'Dunkirk', 2017

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%

After a series of sci-fi blockbusters, Nolan turned to the traditionally academic genre of historical drama. However, instead of a polished, conventional war movie, the director crafted a bold experiment.

The plot is based on the real-life evacuation of Allied soldiers encircled by Nazi forces on the coast of Dunkirk. British civilians came to the troops' aid by setting out to rescue the soldiers in hundreds of small vessels.

In Dunkirk, Nolan once again experimented with the structure: the action unfolds simultaneously across three timeframes – one week, one day, and one hour – which eventually converge.

Deliberately eschewing character backstories, a strong narrative backbone, and excessive sentimentality or melodrama, Nolan opted for a detached, almost wordless cinematic experience.

4. 'Oppenheimer', 2023

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 93%

This sweeping drama about a nuclear physicist held the title of highest-grossing biopic until it was dethroned by Michael. At the heart of the story is Robert Oppenheimer, a brilliant scientist and the father of the world's most destructive weapon.

Even within the genre of dialogue-driven dramas, Nolan continued to experiment with nonlinear storytelling. The film unfolds across multiple timelines simultaneously: in one timeline, Oppenheimer works on the Manhattan Project, in another, he sits in the dock.

As in Memento, Nolan splits the narrative into color and black-and-white sequences. In the former, Oppenheimer is a national hero, and in the latter, he is a traitor to his country.

3. 'The Dark Knight', 2008

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%

The Dark Knight remains one of the highest-rated comic book movies in history. As with the first movie, Nolan was not particularly interested in the epic battle scenes typical of the superhero genre.

The primary focus was on psychological depth. This time, the antagonist was the Joker, played by Heath Ledger – the very embodiment of chaos and irrational violence. However, Batman had to contend not only with the anarchist clown, but also with his own demons.

Instead of a standard blockbuster spectacle, Nolan crafted a tense political action thriller. This revisionist approach transformed the comic book movie genre forever and earned the film six Oscar nominations and two wins, including a posthumous award for Ledger.

2. 'The Odyssey', 2026

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%

Odysseus left his homeland of Ithaca 20 years ago and spent 10 of those years besieging Troy. After the war, his journey home dragged on. Alongside his crew, the commander wandered from island to island, encountering Cyclops, armored giants, and a cunning witch.

Nolan approaches Homer's text with his characteristic grandeur and epic scale. Yet, in the director's hands, the heroic epic unexpectedly transforms into a deeply relevant anti-militarist statement.

Suffering from PTSD, Odysseus emerges as another Oppenheimer – a figure whose creation nearly destroyed the world. The Odyssey is presented here as a brutal tale of the cycle of violence, utterly devoid of even a shred of optimism.

1. 'Memento', 2000

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%

Insurance agent Leonard is seeking to avenge his wife's death. Over a year ago, armed intruders broke into the couple's home and killed her.

The attackers severely injured Leonard's head, leaving him with short-term memory loss. He remembers his life prior to that fateful night, but he forgets everything that happened just five minutes ago.

Memento is the first, and perhaps only, film by Nolan in which the narrative structure does not feel like a mere formalist gesture. The complex structure, with the action unfolding in reverse order, only serves to underscore Leonard's unstable state of mind.
