A stroke of luck takes him to the Italian coast. There, Dickie Greenleaf, the son of a millionaire, has been idling his time away and spending his father's money for years. Dickie's father mistakes Ripley for a friend of his son's and implores him to bring the young man back to New York.
Once in Italy, Tom decides that the elder Greenleaf's money isn't enough, and resolves to take the younger Greenleaf's money – and his identity too.

A psychologist brought in to assist with the investigation discovered that Jamie had fallen under the influence of the incel subculture on social media. Furthermore, he had been bullied by his peers and his parents' relationship had recently become strained.

She gives three different accounts: in one, she was defending herself against an assault, in another, she was merely an accidental witness, and in a third, supernatural forces committed the murder.
