The first season of The Rings of Power may have only just finished, yet production for the show's second season has already started.

As the series' five-season story arc is set to continue, the audience is sure to be led further into the events of Middle-Earth's second age.

The next season will likely show the progression of its already-established characters, as well as the introduction of some new characters as recently announced by Amazon, including one who some fans may know from Peter Jackson's own Lord of the Rings movies.

[Warning: Potential Spoilers]

At the end of the first season, Elrond, Celebrimbor, and Galadriel work together to forge the first three rings of power. These rings are to be commanded by three of the elven elite.

According to Tolkien lore, one will stay with Galadriel, one will go to Gil-galad, and the last will go to the show's newest character, Círdan. Celebrimbor will give Círdan the ring, making him for a time, one of the ring bearers of the elves. Until eventually he will surrender the ring (known as Narya) to Gandalf.

Círdan's role within the books is relatively prominent. He is part of several significant events through much of the three ages. Including his time during the second age where he is second to Gil-galad. Unfortunately, his prominence in Peter Jackson's movies was largely overshadowed.

His role as lieutenant was adapted to be part of Elrond's story instead. And it is Círdan who originally attempts to convince Isildur to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom in the books, not Elrond also. Yet if you watch carefully, his appearance in the films has not been completely removed.

Círdan is still shown during Galadriel's opening monologue of 'Fellowship of the Ring'; presented as one of the elvish ring bearers. He is also shown at the very end of the final movie 'Return of the King', waiting at the docks to leave Middle-Earth with Frodo, Bilbo, and the others.

His presence in the next season of the series will likely be more true to the book's version of his character. He may be introduced as Gil-galad's right-hand man. Chosen to keep one of their three rings of power safe, and strengthen the position of Lindon and the elves of Middle-Earth.

Fortunately, there is still much about this character that can be open to interpretation. And the show's plans for Círdan's future may still offer some unexpected surprises. Viewers will have to eagerly await the series' return, rumoured to be due for release in 2024.
