Westeros finally has a show that comes back on a normal schedule, and it's the one without dragons.

Good news for anyone still not over Ser Duncan the Tall: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is coming in the first half of 2027. HBO chief Casey Bloys told Deadline after the Emmys in September that the show is "coming out in the first half of '27," and he made sure to mention its Emmy nomination while he was at it. There's no exact date yet.

That's roughly a year after season 1, which premiered on January 18, 2026. HBO renewed the show in November 2025, before a single episode had aired, and the person running the show says the annual plan is real:

"Season 2 is expected to debut in the first half of 2027, yeah, absolutely."

Meanwhile, at House of the Dragon

If you've spent the last few years waiting on Targaryens, here's the calendar you've been living on:

  • Season 1: August 2022.
  • Season 2: June 2024.
  • Season 3: June 2026.
  • Season 4 (the last one): 2028.

That's two years between every season. When HBO renewed both shows on the same day in November 2025, programming chief Francesca Orsi pitched it as new Thrones seasons for the next three years running, and the math only works because the two shows alternate: Dunk and Egg in early 2026, dragons in summer 2026, Dunk and Egg again in the first half of 2027, dragons for the last time in 2028.

Dunk and Egg get to skip the line for a pretty boring reason: six episodes that run 30 to 42 minutes each, and no dragons to animate, which means a lot less time in post-production.

The Game of Thrones show with no dragons is the only one HBO can get out every year.

The storm that almost broke the schedule

Season 2 wasn't a sure thing for early 2027. Parker had been aiming to wrap filming in June 2026, but what he called a "once-in-a-100-year storm" pushed production back by about two months. HBO's window survived it. A late-summer wrap leaves the fall and winter for post-production, and HBO hasn't said which month it's aiming for.

Season 2 adapts The Sworn Sword, the second of George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, with Peter Claffey back as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg. And the yearly rhythm isn't just about keeping HBO Max subscribers busy. Parker told Variety in January that he wants to film Ansell growing up alongside the character, with annual seasons of "Egg the boy" for four or five years, then a roughly ten-year jump, and eventually an Egg near the end of his life.
