You come to a French murder mystery for an answer. Rebecca Zlotowski hands you Jodie Foster chain-smoking in flawless French and says: what if the answer is a mirror?

Deeply annoying. Also kind of great. Let's untangle it.

The suspect carousel

Lilian Steiner (Foster), a Parisian psychiatrist, becomes convinced her dead patient Paula didn't die by suicide but was murdered — and the movie cheerfully lets her (and us) suspect everyone:

  • Valérie, the daughter — unstable, standing to inherit, delivering suspicious notes
  • Simon, the husband (Mathieu Amalric) — cruel, cheating, and caught meddling with Paula's prescriptions
  • Pierre, the disgruntled ex-patient — who turns out to be behind the bloody cloth, the scratched car, the creepy calls. Petty king behavior, but not murder

So who did it?

Here's the ending's actual move: nobody gets arrested, because there's no killer to arrest. Simon's final confession reframes everything — Paula had quietly eased her dying aunt Perle out of her pain with medication, and the guilt hollowed her out. The "murder" Lilian was chasing was grief, hers and Paula's both. The detective story was a therapy session wearing a trench coat.

Foster has said playing in French changed her from the inside out, which is basically Lilian's arc in one interview quote:

"I have a different personality in French than I do in English."

The killer question gets a shrug; the crying-eyes mystery gets solved instead. Lilian's tears were the answer all along. French cinema remains undefeated at making you feel silly for wanting a culprit.
