A mythic shift might be closer than it seems.

There’s always something oddly comforting about falling into a Tim Burton world. I was still picturing Margot Robbie looming over tiny buildings when a new rumour surfaced — that he might be making a Medusa film.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burton was asked about Medusa movie for Sony. Until now, nothing had surfaced about such a project. True to form, Burton didn’t confirm it — but he didn’t deny it either. Which, as fans know, tends to mean something is definitely brewing.

Could Greek mythology be his next canvas? It’s not as strange as it sounds. The eerie, tragic undertones of Medusa’s story fit surprisingly well with Burton’s gothic, off-kilter vision. And if the project turns out to be animated — which some speculate it might — the match could be even more uncanny.

It’s worth noting this wouldn’t just be new territory mythologically, but thematically too. Burton has never really ventured into the classical or epic. His worlds are usually hyper-stylised, dreamlike, intimate. So imagining ancient gods and cursed women through his lens? There's something undeniably fresh about it.

For now, though, it remains speculation. In the same interview, Burton also debunked reports of Beetlejuice 3, joking that he’d only just heard about it himself.

"Maybe I’ve been replaced," he said. "It took 35 years to make the second one, so by that time I’ll be 105."

Whether serious or playful, his message was clear: no third Beetlejuice for now.

Whatever the truth behind the Medusa rumour, one thing’s certain: it’s the kind of idea that makes you stop and imagine.
