A new movie with Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega hits the theatres globally already this week.

While Netflix ’s audiences keep track of updates about Wednesday ’s upcoming second season, the show’s lead Jenna Ortega has one more horror-ish story to entertain her fans with in the meantime.

Another big release from A24, a comedy horror Death of a Unicorn also starring Paul Rudd, has been long regarded as one of the most exciting new movies coming to theatres this year; it apparently proved so at SXSW where the film premiered on March 8, roughly three weeks before its theatrical release.

However, things might have got a little less exciting for Death of a Unicorn ahead of its global premiere on March 28 as the movie has now seen a major change in its Rotten Tomatoes’ critical score.

Death of a Unicorn Sinks Below Rotten Tomatoes’ Certified Fresh Criterium

Having kicked it off quite successfully several weeks ago, the movie has suddenly had its RT critical score dropped to 59% after initially securing 70%.

The rating is currently based on 76 reviews and will definitely change once more reviews will flush in after the theatrical release; additionally, Death of a Unicorn has yet to see how well it will perform with audiences.

Despite things not being that bad, the movie’s current critical score might signal some concerns for A24 whose name, ironically, was built mostly due to the company’s earlier horrors like Hereditary, The Witch and Midsommar.

Its more recent films of the genre, however, didn’t receive a warm welcome, with movies like 2024’s The Front Room and 2025’s Opus currently holding 41% of critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Death of a Unicorn Still Has More Chances With Viewers

Even with a controversial score from critics, the film still might be an exciting new addition to the collection of movies blending genres of horror and comedy.

Since not all of those received raving reviews as well, the future film can now rely on some love from its potential viewers who traditionally bring in more positive feedback.

Also starring Will Poulter as one of the leads, Death of a Unicorn follows Rudd and Ortega’s father and daughter accidentally running over a unicorn; when the question about the creature’s magical power rises, the killed animal’s parents start slaughtering those who suggested exploiting the unicorn after its death.
