It's still a perfect example of how to shock a viewer, and no, it's not The Sixth Sense.

Movies have many purposes, and one of them is to intrigue and surprise. Plot twists can dramatically change the perception of a movie: heroes can suddenly become villains, and everything that happened on screen before can turn out to be a dream or a sick fantasy.

Alejandro Amenábar Is a Master of Plot Twists

Oscar-winning director Alejandro Amenábar has made very different films, but he has often played with audience expectations: he confused dream and reality in Open Your Eyes, hid a wolf in sheep's clothing in Regression, and one of the most risky and disheartening twists was in his debut feature, Thesis.

But while Thesis went almost unnoticed, his other work went down in movie history as featuring one of the most unexpected twists in history, and now you can watch this flick on Shudder.

And that movie, of course, is The Others.

Warning: The following text contains spoilers for the movie The Others!

What Is The Twist in The Others?

You can't open a door until the previous one is locked, and the rooms must always remain in semi-darkness: Grace's children are sick, their skin cannot stand direct sunlight. The family hides in silence in their mansion, and somewhere in the distance the volleys of World War II thunder: her husband and father are there now.

One day, not only a new servant appears in the house, but someone else. Someone strange, elusive, someone who makes the floorboards creak at night, the curtains open, and the keys turn by themselves in the lock.

The living will have to learn to live under the same roof with the dead. But no one could have imagined that Grace and her children would be the ghosts, not their new servants.

24 Years Later, The Others Is Still a Perfect Example of How to Surprise Viewers

The creators made the task even more difficult for the viewer by cutting out several scenes from the original cut at the beginning, hinting at the solution of the mystery.

And the creators' plan worked – it is impossible to guess how the events of the movie will turn out, and hints about the real state of affairs can be noticed only upon rewatching.

The Others, with its oppressive gothic atmosphere, desolate landscapes, and huge mansion where danger seems to lurk around every corner, changed the horror and thriller genres more than 20 years ago and continues to influence cinema today.
