And this project actually deserves a sequel.

After six long years, fans of Alita: Battle Angel finally have real hope for a sequel to the cult science fiction saga.

In an interview with Empire, James Cameron announced that work on the Alita sequel will begin immediately after Avatar: Fire and Ash is released.

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez "Sworn a Blood Oath" to Make an 'Alita: Battle Angel' Sequel

Cameron revealed that he and director Robert Rodriguez had made a "blood oath" to make at least one more Alita movie and, ideally, a full trilogy:

“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans. Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we're thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we'll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we're making progress on that.”

Cameron's decision to move to Austin, where he now lives just a few miles from Rodriguez, was significant as well. According to the director, this proximity will significantly speed up the project's development.

Alita: Battle Angel tells the story of a cyborg girl named Alita who is found in a junkyard by Dr. Ido, a surgeon who specializes in repairing cyborgs. Alita's memory has been erased, yet she possesses incredible combat skills.

As she searches for her lost identity, Alita encounters the mysteries of a dark, futuristic world and its inhabitants.

Despite barely breaking even at the box office and facing marketing difficulties, the movie eventually gained cult status. Initially, Cameron planned to direct the film himself, but he was busy with Avatar and handed the reins to Rodriguez, while remaining a producer and co-writer.

Alita is one of those rare blockbusters that combines cutting-edge technology with genuine production skill. The movie's action choreography is still considered a benchmark in the science fiction genre.

Now that Cameron is almost free of the Avatar franchise, there is good reason to believe that a sequel to the Battle Angel story will see the light of day.
