Disney has no intention of abandoning the MCU.

Summary

  • Despite the commercial failures in 2022-2023, Disney is still betting big on Marvel.
  • So while the Kang question is still unresolved, there are seven films scheduled for release that will continue the story in Phases 5 and 6.
  • In addition, several other projects are in the works, with release windows and other details still unknown.

While Disney and Marvel have been flush with cash since the release of 2008's Iron Man through Spider-Man: Far From Home, which completed Phase 3, Phases 4 and 5 have largely been commercial and financial disasters. For every successful project, there were several total flops. Not that people were tired of superheroes (the popularity of Tom Hiddleston's Loki says otherwise), but they were overwhelmed, getting mediocre movies and shows that suffered from poor writing and direction. The future doesn't seem to be all doom and gloom, though.

With the firing of Jonathan Majors, Disney still doesn't seem to know what to do with the role of Kang (although rumors suggest that an active recasting is underway and Colman Domingo is the top candidate), and as such, only one feature film is planned for 2024, which will continue the storyline of the multiverse saga, Deadpool & Wolverine.

However, there are at least six other feature-length projects planned for the next three years, which may finally revive interest in comic book adaptations of beloved superheroes.

Things Can Still Change

The past year has shown that any release planned in advance can fail to meet expectations as soon as there are serious events in the US or the world that also affect and consequently re-shape the entire industry: after Covid-19, as well as WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Disney will certainly take such costs into account. Only time will tell if everything will be released according to the planned schedule.

Moreover, similar to the switcheroo surrounding the Quantumania and The Marvels releases, two upcoming projects have been swapped. Thunderbolts was originally scheduled for July 25, 2025 and The Fantastic Four for May 2, 2025, but Kevin Feige clearly prioritized the latter project, which will introduce new to the Disney MCU new characters as part of Phase 6.

These Aren't the Only Full-Length Releases Planned

While these seven movies are the only ones whose development and release windows have been officially confirmed, Disney has other planned projects on the roster, the details of which have not yet been revealed.

For example, one of the upcoming films will be Armor Wars, which will follow the events of Secret Invasion. Don Cheadle as James Rhodes / War Machine, as well as Walton Goggins, who will reprise the role of Sonny Burch.

There will also be a fourth installment of Spider-Man starring Tom Holland. Former writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have been brought on board for the sequel, and work on the script has been underway since last year, although it was stalled due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. In addition, Simu Liu will return to the role of Shang-Chi in the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The other two sequels will be Doctor Strange 3 and Eternals 2.

Also in development is a new, untitled X-Men movie, which, following Disney's acquisition of 20th Century, will be the first dedicated X-Men story in the MCU since their introduction in Deadpool 3. It's still unknown how Marvel Studios will go about this, and if they will use any of the actors and storylines from 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series.
