Heartbreaking news for fans of HBO's drama series Big Little Lies, as it has been announced that there will be no Season 3 after all.

All talks of a renewal came to a halt following the death of series director Jean-Marc Vallée, who passed away after a heart attack last December at the age of 58.

"I can't imagine going on without him. He really was the visionary for that show. Unfortunately, it's done," said Zoë Kravitz who portrayed Bonnie Carlson for the HBO award-winning show.

The actress was answering one of the many questions fans have had about a possible third season. She said the cast had talked a lot about whether it was possible for Big Little Lies to continue, but the general consensus was that it couldn't go on without its director.

Jean-Marc Vallée was at the helm of the show's first season before handing over to Andrea Arnold for season 2. However, the creative mind that he was, he continued to contribute to the show. His death came as a huge blow to the production team as well as the cast and crew. Following his death, HBO released a statement saying that Vallée was a "fiercely dedicated filmmaker" and "a hugely caring man who invested his whole self alongside every actor he directed."

Kravitz's revelations have come as a bit of a shock to fans of the show, as they have dashed hopes. Just last month, another cast member, Laura Dern, who played Renata Klein, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about how excited she was to see Big Little Lies continue. She hoped that HBO would be able to renew the show.

"I mean, we would all love nothing more, we're like family, just very lucky. I say, let's hold out hope," she said in October. And she was not alone. Dern's co-star Kathryn Newton (Abigail Carlson) said she wanted the show to be renewed, too.

Most of the show's fans on Reddit share the cast's sentiments – the results of a poll posted in Big Little Lies subreddit suggest that fans are still rooting for Season 3. "Never say never", joked HBO programming president Casey Bloys back in 2019 when Season 2 ended.

What's more, at the time, all the main cast members of Big Little Lies, such as Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, put their heads together and shared their ideas of what the third season could possibly focus on. But now it looks like the BLL era is truly over.

Big Little Lies Seasons 1 (2017) and 2 (2019) are now streaming on HBO Max.
