Apparently, TV business requires some unrelated movie experience.

A creator of a bunch of successful Western-y shows for Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan has been long considered a pure master of the genre on Netflix too, until he was ultimately dethroned by another filmmaker with a new hit arrival.

Released on streaming around a month ago, Peter Berg’s American Primeval isn’t planning on leaving Netflix’s global charts anytime soon, also putting Taylor Sheridan’s hit series Yellowstone a little bit behind.

Despite finding different approaches to the same genre, both Sheridan and Berg share similar career dynamics which, proved in Sheridan’s case, might bring an even better perspective for American Primeval’s creator.

Before Turning to TV, Peter Berg Had a Passion for Action Movies — Just Like Taylor Sheridan

American Primeval might have just changed the entire course of his career, but, before conceiving the hit show, Berg directed, wrote and starred in plenty of action-packed flicks that had nothing to do with the Western world whatsoever.

After helming a 2003 action comedy The Rundown, Berg rose to prominence with his third feature film Friday Night Lights that stars, coincidentally, Billy Bob Thornton from Taylor Sheridan’s latest series Landman.

Berg then directed a bunch of other famous action flicks, including The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx and Bradley Cooper, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day which both star Mark Wahlberg. Berg’s paths even crossed with Sheridan too as the former was on board of the latter’s debut crime dramas Hell or High Water and Wind River.

Taylor Sheridan Moved on to Writing After Directing Movies, and Peter Berg Might Follow His Suit

Just like Sheridan’s first ever series Yellowstone proved to be an immense success on Netflix, his future projects later on were transferred to Paramount+ where they’re currently reigning over other prominent shows even after wrapping their latest seasons up.

Berg is now following in Sheridan’s footsteps after releasing his first ever and extremely successful Western-coded show, and it might be a good sign for Netflix to team up with Berg just like Paramount+ did with Taylor Sheridan.

While American Primeval’s creator has proved himself as another potential master of the genre, Netflix hasn’t been a stranger to Westerns either in recent years, dropping a series like Godless and a 12-time Oscar nominee The Power of the Dog.

Additionally, American Primeval might not have enough narrative left to build its second season on, but it’s still a great story that can spawn a couple of spinoffs, just like Sheridan’s Yellowstone that eventually paved the way for prequels 1883 and 1923.
