Hollywood wants to take on Squid Game? Fans aren't happy (and neither are we). Here's why.

The final season of Squid Game dropped last week, and while we're all still trying to make sense of it all and say our proper goodbyes, rumors of an American version are already circulating! Fans worldwide are not so sure about this move though.

Is it really necessary? We don't think so. These are 5 reasons why the American version of Squid Game might miss the mark completely — at least according to fans.

1. Korean Identity: The Soul of ‘Squid Game’ That Can't Be Borrowed

Squid Game is quintessentially Korean. The childhood games and other cultural nuances are what made the original so authentic and captivating. It was the first K-drama for many.

“Part of the unique appeal of Squid Game is the fact that it's Korean. We got to see some really good acting from unknown actors and I really enjoyed being absorbed into the culture from the childhood games to the Korean language,” Redditor InsertUser01 wrote.

2. Too Soon: Why Rush a ‘Squid Game’ Spinoff When the Original Just Ended?

Typically, remakes or spinoffs happen when enough time has passed for nostalgia to kick in, or when a classic story deserves a fresh perspective for a new generation. But Squid Game literally just wrapped its final season less than a week ago! The timing feels odd and even cynical.

3. American ‘Squid Game’ Is Disrespectful Towards What the OG Version Did

American Squid Game actually feels like a slap in the face to what the original created. The Korean show put K-dramas on the global map in a major way and now producers seem to be jumping on the bandwagon.

“I think it's kind of insulting, to be honest. Squid Game put Korean entertainment in the spotlight around the world, even more so than it was before, and then American producers want to come in and steal the plot? Like, ‘Let me copy your homework.’” Redditor calming_ad shared.

4. American Actors in ‘Squid Game’ Were... Not Great

The few American actors who appeared in the original series didn't exactly shine. And when American Recruiter (aka Cate Blanchett) was playing ddakji (a traditional Korean game) things just felt off.

“Every second the American actors were on screen it was terrible, even the dubbed lady. Terrible. Turned a series into just advertisement,” Redditor SoulBurn68 pointed out.

5. Hollywood Loves a Cash Grab, But ‘Squid Game’ Doesn't Make Sense

Studios see dollar signs when something becomes wildly popular. But trying to remake Squid Game for a US audience feels especially tone-deaf. Squid Game literally criticizes capitalism and the desperate lengths people go to for money. And now Hollywood wants to cash in on that message? That's kind of ridiculous.
