Ana de Armas’ First Meeting With Keanu Reeves 10 Years Ago Was a Total Disaster

Ana de Armas stars in the upcoming John Wick spin-off Ballerina. And while we haven't seen the movie yet, it promises to be a real treat as they’re already discussing the sequel.

Producer Erica Lee revealed to Collider:

“I'm hopeful there's a ‘Ballerina 2,’ and ‘John Wick 5,’ and lots of other things.”

But while we all wait for a movie, there's a charming story about how de Armas first crossed paths with Keanu Reeves.

During her acceptance speech for the Action Star of the Year award at CinemaCon, the actress recalled the embarrassing moment she shared with Reeves.

“I met him when I barely spoke English when I moved to L.A. 10 years ago. We were sitting across from each other on the table, and I was really nervous, as you are when you're in front of Keanu Reeves. I couldn't talk to him much because I was so self-conscious about my English and I was really struggling and really trying hard to follow the conversation,” de Armas shared (via The Hollywood Reporter).

When the conversation turned to the Reeves' career, things got complicated.

“He looked at me and asked me if I had seen it [The Matrix]. And I was like, 'The Matrix? No.' Everyone at the table was shocked, so someone came to me and told me in Spanish. 'You haven't seen La Matrix? I was, like, oh La Matrix. Yeah, I have seen that one. That will never not be embarrassing,” de Armas continued.

But the story didn't come out of nowhere, de Armas told it to pay tribute to the work Reeves put into the John Wick franchise. She said:

“There wouldn't be Ballerina without John Wick, and for sure there wouldn't be John Wick without Keanu Reeves.”

Interestingly enough, Reeves wouldn't even be a part of Ballerina if not for de Armas. During the talk with MovieWeb, producer Basil Iwanyk revealed:

“She'd known Keanu for years and kind of helped to reach out and go, 'Let's do this, come on, it's gonna be fun.' And so, she was definitely helpful in getting Keanu excited about the movie. And Keanu's a gigantic fan of Ana, so I think he got really excited about Ballerina once Ana came on board.”
