'Andor' Creator Explains Why Darth Vader Wasn't in Season 2 Finale

Star Wars fans who expected a dramatic Darth Vader appearance in the Andor season 2 finale had to abandon all hope. Here’s how Tony Gilroy explains the decision to not include Vader in the series.
Sith Lord never showed up in Andor season 2 finale, and some Star Wars may feel betrayed — but there’s still a perfect explanation that comes from the show’s creator Tony Gilroy.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Gilroy explained that the absence of Darth Vader wasn’t an accident, but a planned decision.
“If I’d needed them, I would’ve brought them in,” he said.
From the beginning, Andor made it clear that it wouldn't be a typical Star Wars ride. Gilroy and his team promised to avoid fan service just for the sake of it. In fact, the showrunner said that the series was created “as absolutely non-cynical as it could possibly be.” In other words, there would be no surprise cameos just for applause.
Fans Are Perfectly Fine With Darth Vader-less ‘Andor’
While some fans had hoped for a Vader cameo, many agreed that it would’ve felt forced and inappropriate for the overall story.
“Darth Vader is so high above that I don't think he would be willing to get involved unless it's a super serious threat to the Empire, or a personal matter like meeting Luke Skywalker's group or facing Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Redditor n_core said.
What’s Next for ‘Andor’?
With season 2 recently coming to an end, many fans naturally demand more: after all, Andor has been praised as one of the best Star Wars projects to date.
However, despite initial plans for a five-season series, Andor will not return for season three. Gilroy confirmed that the story will end with the final episodes tying directly into the opening moments of Rogue One.
Where to Stream ‘Andor’?
