Andy Muschietti Reveals What 'Welcome to Derry' Season 1 Final Scene Means for Season 2
The story of Pennywise and Derry is about to become even more epic and complex.
Andy Muschietti, the creator of It: Welcome to Derry and the director of the two-part film series based on Stephen King's novel, spoke with Deadline about the first season's finale.
According to Muschietti, the pivotal scene in which Pennywise reveals his knowledge of the future is not only a powerful dramatic moment but also the foundation for the entire future story.
What Happened in 'It: Welcome to Derry' Season 1 Finale?

The first season ended with Marge, Lilly, and Will defeating Pennywise in 1962. However, the most significant revelation was not the monster's defeat, but rather its true nature.
At the climax, Pennywise told Marge that her unborn son, Richie Tozier (who would later join the Losers' Club), would become one of his assassins.
This revealed the entity's fundamental ability to exist outside of linear time and see into the future.
Andy Muschietti Says That Season 2 Will Further Develop the Time Travel Storyline
This means that viewers will see Pennywise attempt to change the past by creating paradoxical time loops, knowing he'll die in the future. Muschietti said:
“His experience of time is non-linear. How is that and why, that's a whole exploration that we intend to flesh out during the next two seasons, but that was pretty much [the idea] from the beginning.
The pitch to Stephen King was we're going to tell a story backwards, and it has to do with that hint.”
Season 2 Will Dive Deeper into the Bob Gray & Ingrid Kersh History, According to Muschietti

One of the central plotlines of the second season will apparently be the tragic story of clown Bob Gray's daughter, Ingrid Kersh.
In the first season, she helped Pennywise hunt children for many years, believing him to be her missing father. The second season, set in 1935, will explore their relationship in detail:
“There's so much. We're going to learn a lot of things about it. We are going to know more about the Bob Gray of things, and we are going to know more about Ingrid, because Ingrid was around in the 30s. Our second season happens in 1935, in theory.”
Is 'It: Welcome to Derry' Renewed for Season 2?
HBO Max has not officially announced a renewal at this point. However, the finale of the first season, as well as the director's ambitious creative plans, make it clear that next chapters are in active development.
The streaming is likely waiting for a complete analysis of viewer interest. However, given the franchise's cult status and Muschietti's vision, the announcement of a second and third season seems imminent.
