Apple TV+ Replacement for 'Ted Lasso' Scores 80% on Rotten Tomatoes: New Show Set to Be a Hit by Finale

The plot also features touching and life-affirming moments.
The new Apple TV+ series Stick has confidently held the number-one spot in the platform’s top 10 for over a week, with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its success and sports theme immediately drew comparisons to another streaming hit — Ted Lasso. And it seems that the show starring Owen Wilson has every chance of becoming a strong successor to the previous favorite.
The Plot of Stick
Viewers are introduced to Price Cahill — once a promising golfer whose career collapsed two decades ago. Now, divorced and homeless, he spends his days behind the counter at a sporting goods store.
Everything changes when he notices Santi — a troubled teen with an incredible natural talent for golf. For Price, this becomes a ticket to a new life, a chance to finally find fulfillment through the success of his gifted student.
Details About Stick
The series premiered on June 4 with three episodes. It steadily climbed the charts and finally reached the top of the U.S. rankings by early July. New episodes will be released weekly until the finale on July 23. Screenwriter Jason Keller told CBR he was inspired by the theme of 'athletes after glory':
"I was interested in exploring the character of Price — a pro athlete that woke up 25 years after his glory days, and what that would be like for somebody like that. If audiences give this show space to affect them, I think they'll feel optimistic watching this show. I think that's probably the big thing," Keller noted.
Although Owen Wilson is best known for his comedic film roles, Stick marks his standout return to the small screen. His co-stars say working with the star has been a pleasure.
