The project survived a change of main villain, a two-year delay, and countless rumors before taking on a somewhat coherent form.

Avengers: Doomsday is the most highly anticipated superhero blockbuster of recent years, and perhaps Marvel Studios' best hope for a return to glory.

After a series of box-office and creative failures, Kevin Feige's studio is banking on a major crossover event that will bring together heroes from different timelines and universes.

Here's when the new Avengers movie will be released, what the plot will be, and which beloved characters will be back on screen.

When Will 'Avengers: Doomsday' Be Released?

The movie was originally scheduled for release on May 2, 2025. However, a scandal erupted in December 2023: Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror, was convicted for domestic violence, prompting the studio to terminate his contract.

Plans for the fifth installment had to be rescheduled urgently. First, the release was pushed back to May 2026, and then to December 16, 2026.

What Will 'Avengers: Doomsday' Be About?

Rumor has it that the conflict will center on the consequences of Steve Rogers' decision to stay with Peggy Carter in a parallel universe. This choice set off a series of cataclysms that threaten to cause worlds to collide.

Doctor Doom lost his family due to Captain America's actions and is now thirsty for revenge. He turns to the new Fantastic Four for help, posing as an ally while actually pursuing his own goals.

Together, they travel to the main timeline to warn the Avengers and the Thunderbolts of the impending threat. According to rumors, both teams will then travel to a third universe – the same one inhabited by the original X-Men from Bryan Singer's trilogy.

One storyline will focus on Thor and Steve Rogers searching for Loki.

Who Is in the Cast of 'Avengers: Doomsday'?

The cast is so impressive that when it was announced in March 2025, it sparked a wave of memes. Nearly every iconic character will return. From the first generation of Avengers: Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange.

They will be joined by the Thunderbolts: Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent, Yelena Belova, Sentry, Red Guardian, and Ghost. The movie will also feature a new Fantastic Four: characters played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn.

The biggest casting news is Robert Downey Jr.'s return, but not as Iron Man – he will play Doctor Doom.

Finally, the biggest surprise is that the original X-Men from the 2000s trilogy will join: Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast will reprise their roles.

The cast also includes Loki, Peggy Carter, Shang-Chi, Namor, and Gambit, played by Channing Tatum.

What Was Shown in the 'Avengers: Doomsday' Teasers?

In one teaser, we see Steve Rogers next to a child who is likely the key to his return. In another teaser, Thor prays to Odin for the strength to protect his daughter and start fighting again.

The most intriguing teaser features an encounter between an elderly Professor X and Magneto in an abandoned school. They discuss death and legacy, leaving viewers to wonder whose side Magneto will take when Doom arrives.

The fourth teaser shows Shuri receiving a visitor in Wakanda – it turns out to be Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four.
