An unexpected collaboration and a familiar actress rumored to star.

Baz Luhrmann is heading to 15th-century France for his next project — and he’s not going alone. The Elvis and Moulin Rouge! director is teaming up with Schindler’s List author Tom Keneally to bring a new version of Joan of Arc’s story to the screen. The film will be based on Keneally’s 1974 novel Blood Red, Sister Rose, which reimagines the final years of the French saint in an intimate and unusual way. Warner Bros. is backing the film.

Rather than a straightforward historical biopic, Luhrmann’s take promises something more dreamlike and internal. The script, co-written with playwright Ava Pickett, will focus on Joan’s inner world — visions, doubt, politics, and all. It’s not hard to imagine Luhrmann bringing his signature visual flair to this darker, more psychological take. Fans of his past work probably know: this won’t be your standard dusty historical drama.

Luhrmann is reportedly deep into research — even trying on real medieval armour — and his longtime creative partner Catherine Martin is once again in charge of costume and production design. Filming is expected to start later this year on the Gold Coast in Australia, where Luhrmann lives and often works.

As for the actress playing Joan? That’s still under wraps. There are whispers about Bella Ramsey, but nothing has been confirmed and the team is keeping quiet for now. Whoever steps into the part will have to handle faith, fire, and a sword or two.
