The theory about an important original character’s death has been here for some time — and now is confirmed.

Summary:

  • Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2 is set to be released in theaters this year — 36 years later after the first film came out.
  • Some key characters are returning to the sequel except for one whose death is hinted at in the brand new trailer.
  • If the theories about Jeffrey Jones’s character’s death are true, the actor might still return to his role, though so far his participation wasn’t confirmed.

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2 took a long way to come — and 36 years after the first film was released the sequel is bringing some drastic changes in the story.

Even though the expanded Deetz family is set to meet again Michael Keaton’s iconic ghost Beetlejuice, fans have been worried about some other important characters’ names’ absence on the list of those returning to the well-known comedy.

Now that a brand new trailer for the upcoming movie has been released, everyone can get a sneak peek of the updated plot and notice that one character is indeed gone for good. The first seconds of the trailer show a funeral scene which confirms a long-standing theory that Charles Deetz (who was portrayed by Jeffrey Jones) dies in the beginning of the film.

Tim Burton himself has admitted that it’s the death of one of the crucial characters that will bring the emotional part of Beetlejuice back on track and thus launch a different plot development — with Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder returning to the second film, there’s also Jenna Ortega that joins them playing Ryder’s character’s teenage daughter.

As it can be suggested now, judging by the trailer, that all three generations of women in the Deetz family will reunite for Charles’s funeral coming back to the old Maitland house to stay in for a while and this way meeting once again the eccentric ghost named Beetlejuice.

Yet Charles Deetz’s sad fate is not a reason to be upset so far as Tim Burton’s universe is unlikely to just wipe the character off the whole storyline. Instead, if he can’t appear as a human, he may still appear as a ghost making a company for Beetlejuice.

And even though Jeffrey Jones’s return was never confirmed, Tim Burton still can have some big surprises in store which will be unveiled this June.
