Before Longlegs, Maika Monroe Starred in This Hidden Horror Gem – It Comes to Netflix Soon
This is a stalker horror that will keep you guessing from the first minute to the last.
Longlegs was a horror movie with the most powerful advertising campaign of 2024. The film divided viewers into three camps: the first was delighted to discover that Osgood Perkins returned to the ideas of The Blackcoat's Daughter; the second came to the conclusion that the movie was overhyped.
And the third? Well, the third ones fell in love with the leading actress Maika Monroe.
Maika Monroe Is One of the Main Scream Queens of Our Time
Although for many viewers the actress' talent was only discovered in Longlegs, Monroe has an impressive list of horror films under her belt. Since her debut in 2014, Maika has starred in at least nine horror films and subgenres.
Most of them have fairly high Rotten Tomatoes scores, with the exception of Netflix 's techno-horror Tau, which was an unfortunate misstep in an otherwise uncompromising string of triumphs.
You could see her in one of the main representatives of the elevated horror, It Follows; in Paramount's Significant Other, as well as in the film Villains, where she starred with Bill Skarsgård.
But the most important hidden gem in her filmography is the movie Watcher, which was rated even higher than Longlegs on Rotten Tomatoes with 88%.
What Is Watcher About?
Aspiring actress Julia gives up her career ambitions for the sake of her husband, who has been offered a promising promotion and a move to Bucharest.
The new place does not welcome them with open arms: the language barrier makes it difficult for Julia to communicate with the locals, and her ever-busy husband disappears day and night at work.
The dreary loneliness of the big city is broken by a sudden murder: a decapitated girl is found in the neighborhood. At the same time, Julia begins to notice a frightening male shadow watching from the window across the street.
Watcher Is a Masterfully Executed Horror Film Made by a First-Time Director
Chloe Okuno follows the well-trodden paths of stalker movies in her directorial debut, but she does it with such grace and subtlety that fear creeps into your bones, even when it seems that Julia has made everything up and let fear rule her mind.
Whether the woman is suffering from a premonition or paranoia remains unclear until the very end. Watching Watcher takes your breath away: Okuno passes the entrance exam of the genre and Maika Monroe once again proves that she feels at home on the horror ground.
Watcher Is About to Drop on Netflix
Watcher is coming to Netflix – the stalker horror will appear on the platform on February 25.
