Before Your Friends & Neighbors, Jonathan Tropper Made a Crime Masterpiece With 93% on RT

In 2013, the creator of Your Friends & Neighbors released one of the most brutal crime shows of this century, Banshee. It stars Antony Starr, who played Homelander in The Boys, and here's why you need to watch it.
The new Apple TV+ hit, which ranks first among the platform's series, is Your Friends & Neighbors, a dark comedy starring Jon Hamm and created by Jonathan Tropper.
12 years before releasing a show about a failed financier who starts robbing his neighbors' houses, Tropper created perhaps one of the most masculine and powerful crime shows of the 21st century – Banshee.
What Is Banshee About?
Lucas (Antony Starr) is a former thief who once betrayed his accomplices. After serving his sentence, he arrives in a small Pennsylvania town called Banshee, where he tricks his way into becoming the local sheriff.
The gangsters he once betrayed still remember him and are out for revenge. A violent confrontation between the newly appointed sheriff and his former pals is brewing.
The peace of the local resident is disturbed, and murder follows murder as the sheriff begins to restore order to the town entrusted to his care.
Banshee's Lucas Is Similar to The Boys' Homelander
Antony Starr became widely known for his performance as Homelander in The Boys, but it is possible that he was invited to this project precisely because of his brilliant performance in Banshee.
Despite being a thief, Starr's Lucas was a loving father to his daughter. His criminal background gave him few inhibitions about breaking the law, which helped him as a sheriff because he was not constrained by a heroic code in his pursuit of justice.
His warped sense of justice allowed him to go where others on his force would not – and this is the character with ambiguous morals that Starr will bring to Homelander.
It Is an Ultra-Violent Crime Show That Gave Us Some of the Most Impressive Action Scenes on TV
Banshee was originally intended for an adult audience experienced in action and crime genres – it's full of intimate scenes, blood, gunshots and fights.
The show, which already had no shortage of on-screen blood, topped itself in the third episode of Season 3 with one of the most impressive and brutal fights ever shown on TV.
The fight between one of the crime bosses and the daughter of the chief of the local Indian tribe is a blast of cruelty and a direct shot of adrenaline into the heart of the viewer.
What Did Viewers & Critics Think of Banshee?
The Hollywood Reporter critic Tim Goodman wrote:
“Starr is intriguing, and the tone set by Tropper and [David] Schickler hooks you immediately. [...] The writers have assembled a number of interesting characters and dole out the back-stories slowly and with an assured hand.”
