The on-screen chemistry between the fictional FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) in the popular American science fiction TV series The X-Files was undeniable.

However, although these much-loved characters became a fan-favorite duo, rumors of tension between the actors behind the scenes have consistently persisted.

The speculation of tension between Anderson and Duchovny began to surface during the show's initial run, which aired between 1993 to 2002.

This was then later confirmed by both actors discussing their complicated relationship.

Duchovny first revealed in an interview with Metro in 2008, "We used to argue about nothing. We couldn't stand the sight of each other." This was later confirmed by Anderson, who revealed to the Guardian in 2015 that "there were definitely periods when we hated each other".

She also mentioned the pair sometimes did not talk to each other at all, calling them both "pains in the arse".

The difficulties between the pair seemed to be the source of the two's very different personalities. Reportedly making it problematic to get along off-screen.

However, being constant professionals, both actors have always managed to maintain a functional working relationship. This likely led to the continuing success of the X-Files and the lengthy amount of time it was able to continue.

Moreover, although both actors have talked about their tenuous connection, they have always remained civil to each other when discussing their time on the show in interviews.

Instead of bad-mouthing or name-calling, they have demonstrated a fondness for each other's work within the series and shown much mutual respect.

Fortunately, their dislike of each other has softened over the years. Although they may not be the closest friends, Anderson has defined their attachment as "closer than they have ever been".

The (ex) co-workers can even be seen hanging out socially. As revealed in Anderson's Instagram, she posted a selfie back in 2021 of herself and Duchovny with her labradoodle. The caption read, "Stella made a new friend today. @davidduchovny," and showed them both smiling.

Despite the rumors, it's important to remember that actors are human beings with complex relationships.

It's not uncommon for people to have disagreements or tensions with their co-workers, and the nature of the entertainment industry can often exacerbate these issues.

While it's impossible to know what went on between Anderson and Duchovny behind the scenes, it's clear that they were able to put any differences aside to create one of the most iconic TV partnerships of all time.
