Fantasy has been one of the most popular genres in fiction for decades now — and among all the fantasy settings that have ever existed, Dungeons & Dragons is by far the most popular. That’s why it’s quite surprising it took so unfathomably long for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to be made, released, and unanimously loved by fans. Well, at least now, the movie’s out and doing great!

D&D the Movie Is Killing It on Paramount Plus

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered in 2023 and, despite being a relatively niche movie, turned out to be a massive critical and commercial success. Set in the famous Forgotten Realms setting, this spectacular fantasy-comedy-action follows the mishaps and trials of a small group of adventurers who found themselves entangled in a plot much bigger than them.

Just yesterday, the movie took the Paramount Plus charts by storm, rushing straight into the seventh spot and breathing down Mean Girls, Transformers 7, and Mission: Impossible 7’s necks. It might as well continue its climb as realistically, it’s one of the best (if not just the best) fantasy comedies in the history of the genre.

Honor Among Thieves Was a Huge Success

While Dungeons & Dragons is undoubtedly the most popular fantasy setting ever, it’s important to understand that Honor Among Thieves was still a pretty niche movie. It didn’t have the MCU budget, but still performed miraculously: against its production budget of $45M, this film raked up a sensational $208M, at least doubling all production and marketing expenses even by the most conservative standards.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was incredibly well-received, too. As of the time of writing, this fantasy comedy boasts a great 91% Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more impressive 93% Audience Score to compliment its eyes. We’re very much not surprised that this movie is blowing up the charts; we’re more surprised that it doesn’t do that more often.
