Beyond Until Dawn: 6 Highly Anticipated Video Game Adaptations to Add to Your Watchlist

The success of video game adaptations has spurred interest in the genre, with more and more news that popular titles are being adapted for the big screen.

In honor of the release of Until Dawn, we decided to remember other anticipated video game adaptations.

1. Return to Silent Hill

Release Date: 2025

The movie Return to Silent Hill is scheduled for release this year. Together with the recently released remake of the game Silent Hill 2, it should mark the beginning of the rebirth of the legendary franchise.

In terms of plot, Return to Silent Hill will be an adaptation of the events that unfold in the video game Silent Hill 2, released in 2001. Therefore, the plot of the movie will develop parallel to the story of the first two parts and will not be their continuation.

Jeremy Irvine will play the role of James Sunderland, and the character of Mary, James' ex-wife, will be portrayed by Hannah Emily Anderson.

2. Mortal Kombat 2

Release Date: October 24, 2025

In 2025, we will see a sequel to the 2021 movie, which forgot to show the Mortal Kombat tournament itself. This time, the creators promise to finally give fans what they have been waiting for – Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.

The old cast is back in full force: Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade and Tadanobu Asano as Raiden. They will be joined by newcomers: Tati Gabrielle will play Jade, Adeline Rudolph will play Kitana, and Martyn Ford will portray the role of Shao Kahn.

3. Iron Lung

Release Date: TBA

YouTuber Mark Fischbach, better known as Markiplier, known for his emotional reactions to horror games, has decided to make a movie adaptation of the indie horror game Iron Lung. In the original, the main character, a prisoner, controls an ancient submarine in a sea of blood on a distant moon.

Considering that the game itself has almost no linear plot, it will be interesting to see how Markiplier will stretch this minimalist story into a full-length movie. Due to the filming of Iron Lung, the streamer was unable to make a cameo appearance in another game adaptation – Five Nights at Freddy's.

4. Ghost of Tsushima

Release Date: TBA

Back in October, Sony announced its intention to develop the Ghost franchise. Now we know for sure: Ghost of Tsushima will be getting two adaptations at once – an anime series and a full-length movie.

The anime will be called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends and will be released on Crunchyroll in 2027. It will be based on the game's cooperative mode, in which you will have to fight various representatives of Japanese folklore. The anime will be directed by Takanobu Mizuno.

The announced full-length movie will be directed by Chad Stahelski and most likely focus more on the main storyline of the game.

5. Five Nights at Freddy's 2

Release Date: December 5, 2025

Remember the horror movie about a creepy pizzeria with robot animals? In 2025 we will see a sequel to the movie, which in 2023 made the eyes of critics hurt, but impressed fans.

According to the plot of the game, you are hired as a night watchman in a family pizzeria, where cute during the day and very unfriendly at night robot animatronics live.

6. Horizon Zero Dawn

Release Date: TBA

The big announcement was the start of work on a feature film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn. The project will be a collaboration between PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures, a studio that has already proven its success in adapting game franchises with the release of the Uncharted movie.

This is not the first attempt by Sony to bring the adventures of Aloy to the big screen – there have been rumors of the development of a series based on the Horizon universe for Netflix.

However, last year it was reported that the project had been frozen due to a "toxic work environment" on the set. It is not yet clear if the movie will completely replace the series.
