Don’t miss the genre’s unique gem.

Summary:

  • 2 years ago, Bill Skarsgård starred in a horror movie, following the two renters of a mysterious house, who fall victim to the evil creature living there.
  • Now topping Netflix, it’s praised for an amazing mix of scary elements and humor, which makes a solid must watch of it.

The most famous Pennywise actor, Bill Skarsgård, has already made his name as a brilliant horror performer while starring not only in the two It movies (2017, 2019), but also in the chilling series Hemlock Grove (2013–2015) and Castle Rock (2018–2019).

Continuing his major career trend, he also took part in a smaller-scale project, which didn’t suffer from its modest budget at all. On the contrary, it received lots of hype and even now, two years after its release, it is holding the second place in Netflix’s chart.

The movie’s plot revolves around the haunted house, and this trope is obviously used in an enormous number of horrors. However, here the monster, typically hiding in the basement, doesn’t turn out to be the main evil, damaging the characters the most.

It starts by showing Tess (played by Georgina Campbell), who arrives at a rental house in Detroit to find it already occupied by a man named Keith (Skarsgård). It may initially seem that the double-booking trick was made on purpose to attract more victims to the house’s mysterious beast, which is quick to start tormenting Tess and Keith.

However, it appears to be just the mistake made by the house’s owner, the reckless actor AJ Gilbride (Justin Long), heading to Detroit to inspect the house before selling it. It’s quite guaranteed he’s going to meet the unexpectedly horrifying inhabitant there.

The movie offers a bunch of turns you, just like AJ, wouldn't expect. It mixes the nail-biting horror sequences and moments of levity and fun, delivering mostly through Long’s hilarious performance. You’ll definitely like such a mix of scary and humorous parts if you’re a fan of Mia Goth’s X (2022) or Simon Pegg’s Shaun of the Dead (2004).

We’re talking about the sensational directorial debut of Zach Cregger, titled Barbarian, which made ten times its budget of $4.5 million at the box office. It also received critics’ glowing praise, and it’s proved by its 93% of critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Absolutely loved this. Had no idea where it was going minute to minute and was an absolute thrill to watch. The horror, comedy, thriller elements all worked for me,” said Redditor @OriginalBad in the movie’s discussion.

Check out whether this indie horror deserves so much hype or not, as Barbarian is available for streaming on Netflix.
