George Martin’s feud with fans over “The Winds of Winter” has been going on for more than a decade, but the novel might have actually been finished years ago — here’s what a new rumour suggests.

Things have been pretty complicated for George Martin’s “The Winds of Winter” ever since he started working on it back in 2011. However, numerous and pretty annoying delays might not be the author’s fault entirely.

Fans of Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” and HBO’s Game of Thrones spent the last 15 years listening to the writer’s false promises to finish the chapter as quickly as possible, often coming to a direct confrontation with him now that there’s almost no hope for the novel’s release anytime soon.

Still, tables might turn pretty radically if a new and pretty shocking rumor about “The Winds of Winter” gets a confirmation.

George Martin Might Have Actually Finished “The Winds of Winter” Years Ago

Game of Thrones’ author hasn’t been quite active as a writer during all those years, but the real reason for that might have something to do with the TV series’ creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss.

According to a new report shared by Fandom Pulse, an insider who works in a publishing industry and is close to the representatives of George Martin’s publishers Spectra and Voyager has recently stated that George Martin actually finished writing “The Winds of Winter” at the time Game of Thrones’ season 6 was entering its production.

They also highlighted that Martin was possibly forced to reveal his version of Game of Thrones’ ending to the series’ creators, with Benioff and Weiss arguing that they needed time to come up with the entire story when the time comes for Game of Thrones’ season 8.

“The Winds of Winter” Delay Might Be Due to Benioff and Weiss’ Reaction

By making it clear that the book wasn’t really seen by anyone except for the TV series’ creators, the report also suggests that “The Winds of Winter” was eventually never published because Benioff and Weiss simply didn’t like the way things ended there and decided to come up with their own conclusion.

This might also be what led to their eventual fallout with George Martin and the latter’s decision to stay away from Game of Thrones’ production process during the last couple of years.

On top of that, it’s implied that Martin might have given the manuscript to his publishers at some point, but changed his mind when Game of Thrones’ season 8 caused quite a havoc among its fans.

So far, nothing of this has received any kind of confirmation, but if it does, Martin will likely stop being the main villain for Game of Thrones’ lovers after all those years.
