Blue Lights Angela episode explained: what happened when the abuser outranked every cop on the call
It's a routine domestic call in a nice house, cleared up in about ninety seconds by a couple who say the phone was knocked off the hook. One word in that conversation is doing a great deal of work.
The episode is "The Bird," series 3, episode 3, written by Fran Harris and directed by Jack Casey, broadcast on BBC One on 13 October 2025 to 4.36 million viewers. Tommy Foster and Aisling Byrne (Dearbháile McKinney) attend after a call is made from inside the property by a child. The address belongs to Chief Inspector Gavin Bunting (Patrick Buchanan), from neighbourhood policing. His wife Andrea says the call was an accident. Then she works the name "Angela" into the exchange.
Why the name is the whole scene
"Ask for Angela" is real. It launched in Lincolnshire in 2016, devised by Hayley Crawford, the county council's substance misuse and sexual violence prevention coordinator, as part of the #NoMore campaign. The name comes from Angela Phillips, killed by her husband in 2012. In a participating bar, asking staff for Angela means: get me out of this. Staff are meant to move the person somewhere safe, call a taxi, or remove the other party.
The scheme spread to Australia — over a thousand Sydney bars by 2018 — plus Canada, New Zealand, Argentina and the United States, where it mutated into ordering an "angel shot."
A BBC investigation in November 2024 tested 25 London venues. In 13 of them, staff did not respond appropriately to the codeword.
Blue Lights takes a phrase built for bar staff and puts it in a living room, in front of two uniformed constables, one of whom knows what it means.

The part where rank decides everything
Aisling flags it. Management declines to take the matter further — the house belongs to a chief inspector, the couple have given an account, and there is no complaint on the record.
So she goes back on her own. She finds Bunting shouting at Andrea and apparently choking her, and she hits him with her baton. The episode ends on that, mid-consequence, which is the point at which BritBox later cut a standalone clip and the official Ask for Angela campaign account shared the scene.
What it costs her
Episode 4, "The Parting Glass," aired 20 October 2025 to 4.30 million viewers, and deals with the paperwork rather than the crime. Aisling is questioned about the unauthorised visit, told to hand in her firearm, and sent home pending a decision. Her superiors tell her trauma — she is already carrying a car crash from earlier in the series — is affecting her judgement. Her position is that she went back because Andrea was in the house with him.
Then she keeps going. She turns up at the home of Ciaran O'Boyle's parents, outside any authorised line of enquiry, and comes away with four names connected to criminal activity. Tommy reports her behaviour up the chain. McNally sends her away for residential recovery, and she is absent for the close of the series.
The series never stages a scene of Gavin Bunting being charged. What it stages instead is the process that runs on the constable.
The wider run
Series 3 ran six episodes from 29 September to 3 November 2025, averaging 4.33 million viewers, and finished as the strongest-rated series yet for creators Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson. Episodes 3 and 4 were the two Fran Harris wrote. A fourth series was commissioned by the BBC back in May 2024.
Bunting appears in exactly one episode of television. He is credited as guest cast.
