The Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi comedy was released in theatres less than a month ago.

It’s been quite a long journey for Bong Joon Ho’s brand new movie which is about to end roughly four weeks after it finally made it to theatres worldwide.

Initially scheduled for a release in January of 2024, Mickey 17, which came as Joon Ho’s first movie since Oscar-winning Parasite, has gone through several delays until it eventually arrived in cinemas on March 7.

The film, however, wasn’t that much of a box office success, despite positive predictions and a handful of favorable reviews from critics, but things might change when Mickey 17 finally arrives on streaming.

Mickey 17 Is Getting Digital Release Next Week

Those who have missed out on the movie in theatres won’t have to wait long until it’s available for watching at home as Mickey 17 is now set to land on streaming on April 8.

Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, the movie stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a young man trying to escape a deadly danger on Earth by signing up as a member of a crew which embarks on a mission to colonize the ice-planet Niflheim.

Not knowing yet what trouble it will bring him in the future, Mickey accepts to become “Expendable”, which means he doesn’t mind being illegally cloned after dying.

However, as Mickey keeps dying again and again, new versions of him take his place every so often, but once a fatal mistake leads to two Mickies co-existing and dealing with egomaniacal politician Kenneth Marshall’s ruthless intentions.

Mickey 17 Deserved More Than a Box Office Flop Status

Even with 78% of critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Mickey 17 turned out to be a major box office disappointment, grossing only $121 million against its budget of $118 million.

The movie, however, continues Joon Ho’s successful streak with black comedies like 2019’s Parasite, once again offering a glimpse into the real-life world problems decorated with space-themed backgrounds.

Also starring Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette as the couple of politicians that aim it demolishing the alien planet’s nature, Mickey 17 is a witty satire that, sadly, not many were willing to check out even after Joon Ho cemented his status as one of the most deservingly proclaimed directors of recent years.

Hopefully, the movie’s upcoming digital release will make a difference.
