Brandon Sanderson's 'Mistborn' & 'Stormlight Archive': Everything You Need to Know About the Adaptations
These are the projects every epic fantasy fan is waiting for.
In January 2026, epic fantasy fans received heart-stopping news – Apple TV had acquired the film rights to two of Brandon Sanderson's major series. The studio plans to release a feature film based on the Mistborn trilogy and a series based on The Stormlight Archive.
Sanderson, known for his productivity and integrity, finally received the creative control he had dreamed of for years – he will write the scripts, serve as a producer, and act as showrunner.
Here's more about these series and why their adaptations could become major streaming hits.
What Is 'Mistborn' About?

The trilogy is set in a world where evil has long since triumphed. The immortal Almighty rules the land, which appears bleak. During the day, ash falls from the sky, obscuring the blood-red sun. In the evening, an ominous fog envelops the land.
Almost no plants remain, and most people are enslaved. The main character, Vin, is a young thief who accidentally falls into a conspiracy plotting to overthrow the tyrant. However, their plan seems doomed because the ruler is too powerful.
In this world, magic is based on the properties of metals, or Allomancy. An Allomancer who "burns" metal gains various abilities.
For instance, someone who wields steel can hurl metal objects and levitate, bouncing off coins like a pinball. Zinc Allomancers can manipulate and amplify the emotions of others.
Mistborns are rare all-around Allomancers who can burn all metals.
What Is 'The Stormlight Archive' About?

The Stormlight Archive is an epic fantasy series set in the world of Roshar. The series boasts over ten magical systems based on the power of spren, spirits that embody emotions and the forces of nature.
Bonding with a spren grants a person special abilities – some can create illusions, while others can manipulate gravity and fly. The key requirement is the presence of Stormlight, an energy generated during the gigantic storms that regularly shake the world.
The first volume introduces three characters from different social strata: Kaladin, a soldier turned slave; Shallan, a provincial noblewoman who dreams of becoming the king's daughter's apprentice; and Dalinar, the king's uncle and a great military leader.
Their country is waging an endless war against the savages who killed the previous ruler. However, it soon becomes clear that things are not so simple.
The overarching plot focuses on the collapse of the established world order and an impending catastrophe. As the series progresses, the scale of events and the complexity of the universe grow, making it ideal for a TV format.
What Should We Expect From the Apple TV Adaptations?
Apple TV+ doesn't have a single epic fantasy hit yet, but Sanderson's adaptations could fill that void.
The main challenges for the creators are achieving the show's visual scope and making the magic seem authentic. In both series, the characters fly, communicate with gods, and travel into the distant past. The Stormlight Archive requires depicting gigantic storms, unusual spren, and battles between thousands of armies.
A movie based on Mistborn should feature dynamic scenes of chases and magical battles, as well as stealth missions.
In terms of intrigue, both adaptations have the potential to rival Game of Thrones. In The Stormlight Archive, political conflicts begin immediately: Dalinar, an honest and dutiful commander, is forced to participate in games he's unprepared for.
Most importantly, Apple TV+ has given Sanderson the creative control he's sought for years and the writer plans to finish the script by July.
