Brendan Fraser Spills: The Simple Reason Tom Cruise’s 'Mummy' Was a Total Flop

Fraser’s words make perfect sense.
Brendan Fraser finally spelled out why Tom Cruise’s The Mummy crashed and burned while his 1999 classic still feels like cinematic treasure. At Fan Expo Denver, Fraser reunited with John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr, delighting fans hungry for nostalgia. But naturally, someone had to drag Cruise’s ill-fated reboot into the conversation.
When asked if his Mummy was ever meant to cross over with other monster franchises, Fraser laughed:
"I really don’t know. I know Tom Cruise tried to make his movie and it ain't easy! We all know how hard this movie is to make…"
Then he landed the killer line about why Cruise’s version didn’t work.
"With the exception of three (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), the thing with all of these films is that, at least it was fun, it was a thrill ride, and you wanted to do it again. The answer is you’ve just got to give everybody what they really really want. If you stray from that path…"
And there it is: audiences didn’t crave a grim, overblown "Dark Universe," they wanted playful scares, cracking adventure, and Fraser’s roguish charm. Maybe the real curse wasn’t in the tomb — it was forgetting to have fun. So, team Fraser or team Cruise? Let’s hear it.
