Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie became a major box office hit and a pure cult classic.

Brendan Fraser ’s career, successfully launched in the 1990s, remained in stagnation for years before Darren Aronofsky’s 2022 psychological drama The Whale eventually brought him a long-overdue Oscar at the 2023 ceremony.

Despite a major career break, the actor had starred in numerous movies that with time became cultural phenomena and remain ones decades later.

This point has been proven once again by Fraser’s 1999 hit movie that is still everyone’s favorite cult classic, considering that the flick is currently one of the most watched movies on the free streaming.

Also starring Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, The Mummy is based on a 1932 horror film of the same name and follows an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers somewhere in the Sahara Desert in 1925.

Things get complicated when Fraser’s Rick O'Connell, accompanied by librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her older brother Jonathan during their trip to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, accidentally awakens Imhotep whose resurrection was believed to bring an unstoppable evil on Earth.

Even though the movie left critics uninspired, currently holding 62% of favorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, The Mummy sat quite well with the audiences, grossing more than $400 million in the box office worldwide against its initial budget of $80 million.

The film was then garnered as one of the highest-grossing flicks released that year, and later on spawned a whole new franchise, receiving two sequels titled The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, premiering in 2001 and 2008 respectively.

The movie also inspired a reboot of the same name with Tom Cruise as its lead, though it failed quickly, still sitting with 15% and 35% from critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
